This weekend, at the annual alumni hockey games, it was once again time for the old (and not so old) guard to dust off their skates and once again hit the ice at the Martha's Vineyard Arena.
Beth O’Connor was nine years old when she began skating at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena. At that time, the arena had just a roof, and players hung tarps around the sides in the winter to keep rain and snow off the ice. In 1992 the arena was enclosed for year-round skating and locker rooms were added to the building a few years later.
“I’ve watched the arena be cut and pasted together over the years,” Ms. O’Connor said. “It’s been great to see it grow.”
They can fly, they feel pretty, they’re singing in the rain and on top of all that, they skate in a chorus line. The Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating Club was on the ice at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena last weekend for its 25th anniversary show, A Skate Down Memory Lane.
Youth hockey season wrapped up last weekend with the Vineyard picking up a championship tournament trophy.
Eating for the ice, that’s what’s happening on Wednesday, March 20 at Eleven North in Edgartown. As part of the kickoff “Raise the Roof” campaign for the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena, the restaurant is donating 20 per cent of the proceeds of a prix-fixe, three-course meal to the arena. The cost for the dinner is $35.
