Animal Shelter of

Martha's Vineyard

What better way to volunteer your time than to work with cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and the occasional guinea pig or rabbit who are all in need of attention as they wait to be adopted. In addition to what we refer to as socializing.

There are many other opportunities – we always need help welcoming the people who come to visit us and there is always general cleaning and organizing when it's not feeding time for our guests. Our list of needs is endless; from computer skills to painting and general fixing and even helping us with our fundraising tasks. We also host special events all year long. BiodiversityWorks is a non-profit that promotes biodiversity conservation across Martha’s Vineyard through wildlife research and monitoring and community outreach.

Our 2020 spring and summer initiatives include monitoring beach-nesting birds, tracking rare bats, and spotted turtle research. More information is at www.biodiversity worksmv.org. While our projects remain active despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we are unable to train new volunteers at this time. However, we still want to hear from you. We generally welcome volunteers ages 15 and up; if you are interested in volunteering, please contact volunteers@biodiversityworksmv.org and we’ll add you to our list. Many of our projects lend themselves to social distancing, so we hope to be able to get volunteers safely into the field soon.

Martha's Vineyard Community Services, in collaboration with Island Grown Initiative and the Vineyard Food Equity Network, is launching a volunteer coordination program called Care for Community to ensure that organizations providing food to those who cannot access or afford it are able to operate.

Care for Community will work as a matchmaker between organizations and volunteers. All Island nonprofits are eligible to participate.

Organizations are asked to submit an organization form via a new webpage hosted by Martha's Vineyard Community Services.

Community members looking to volunteer will fill out a separate volunteer form, selecting the organizations and/or categories for which they are qualified to volunteer.
