Plans for a 10-day summer festival in Aquinnah to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the blockbuster Jaws have deteriorated before they ever really materialized.

Aquinnah selectmen this week held off on signing a conservation restriction on two parcels that are tied to the Moshup Trail Project. Two of the three selectmen told Brendan O’Neill, the executive director of the Vineyard Conservation Society, that there are too many unresolved issues.

Selectman Walter Delaney said: “I do have questions.” Mr. Delaney said at least one of the parcels, five acres belonging to South Shore Beach Inc., is used as a beach access club. Mr. Delaney asked how a conservation restriction can apply to a 16-car parking lot and how it benefits the town.

Aquinnah voters will decide a two-way select board race at next week’s annual town election. Incumbent Thomas Murphy faces challenger Jannette Vanderhoop.

Architect Phil Regan of Hutker Architects went to the select board Tuesday to represent his clients that have received sticker shock from the new building permit process. Aquinnah calculates its building permit fee by charging $10 for every $1,000 of construction. 

After narrowly rejecting the budget last month, Aquinnah voters easily passed the town’s $432,432 portion of the budget 39-2.

Aquinnah is considering work to improve the restrooms and water line at Aquinnah Circle, as well as the town hall parking lot.
