West Tisbury police are investigating a report that a woman hitchhiking on State Road late last month was sexually assaulted after a driver picked her up, drove her to an isolated stretch of dirt road and covered her head with a blanket while flashing a gun.
According to a press release, the woman was hitchhiking on State Road in Vineyard Haven on August 28 around 4 p.m. when she entered the vehicle of an unknown driver. The male suspect then pulled a blanket from the back seat and covered the woman’s head, and drove her to Oak Lane in West Tisbury where the assault took place, police said.
The woman told police she saw the attacker sitting on a gun, which she described as silver.
The only description available yesterday was that of a male in his late 30s, with a medium to heavy build, short dark hair, unshaven, reddish-tan face.
The suspect’s vehicle was described as a bright red, mid-1990s model four-door sedan.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the West Tisbury police at 508-693-0020.
