Veterans, merchant mariners, and others involved in past and present service will be honored at 5:30 p.m. today, Friday, Nov. 9 at the Shabbat service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Centre street in Vineyard Haven.

An Oneg Shabbat with refreshments will follow the service honoring veterans. The Island community is invited to the service.

As part of the service, Yahrzeit (memorial) candles will be lighted to pay homage to those who served, were killed in action, or have died since serving. Those who had loved ones serving in our present Iraq war or earlier wars will have an opportunity to note the service of their loved one. Veterans and others who served are asked to bring a picture of them in uniform. Those attending the service, if they wish, may bring a favorite appropriate reading.

Rabbi Caryn Broitman will lead the Shabbat service.

Jo Ann Murphy, veterans agent for Dukes County, will attend the service and be available to answer veteran-related questions.
