The Cape Cod and the Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross is urging people to take action to prepare themselves for the impending winter storms. After yesterday’s a potentially severe northeaster is expected on Saturday night and Sunday. Depending on the nature of the precipitation, that storm could cause power outages.
Before winter weather strikes, the Red Cross advises:
• Make sure your vehicle is filled with fuel.
• Make sure you have an ample supply of prescription medications and other essential needs.
• Check your disaster supplies kit to ensure it has nonperishable foods, drinking water, flashlights and a battery-operated radio.
• Check on neighbors and the elderly to make sure they have a safe place to ride out the storm.
• Move animals to sheltered areas.
During the storm:
• Stay indoors. Traveling during winter weather can be hazardous.
• Keep fire hydrants cleared of snow, and try to keep house numbers visible from the street.
• If the power goes out, Do not use candle for light. Use flashlights.
After the storms:
• Be very careful shoveling the snow. Take frequent breaks, and beware of

“People should monitor these storms carefully,” Cape Cod and the Islands chapter executive director Glen Beasley said. “By taking steps now, people can make life more comfortable for themselves and their families, should they lose power.”
