Regional High School
Summer Sessions Begin
A dozen new classes and clinics highlight the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s summer program.
Children’s creative drama with Phyllis Vecchia, clay pottery, arts and crafts, guitar, flash animation, science, and track and field are some of the classes and clinics that will be offered for the first time.
Football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, tennis and other sports clinics will continue, some with new directors.
Nationally recognized for her leadership in the field of biology, Elliott Bennett will teach the Wonders of Science class. Children will explore physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and ecology.
Several other programs debut or return this summer. A new tennis clinic, directed by instructor Chris Fecitt, opens in July. Other sports programs include basketball with Michael Joyce; soccer with Garry Metters; and football with Vineyard football coach Donald Herman.
Former Sports Illustrated featured athlete, Liane Dixon, will direct the new field hockey clinic.
Scrabble expert and U.S. Chess Master David Koenig will offer, for the 11th summer, his incredible chess course for players of all ages. In addition, Mr. Koenig, who is ranked in the top 100 Scrabble players in North America, will continue teaching his Scrabble course.
Island artist and teacher Scott Campbell will conduct his art studio for children. Participants will have fun creating clay pots on a pottery wheel and participating in many other activities.
Technology-minded children and adults can sign up for flash animation as well as NXT Legos Mindstorms Robotics, co-taught by regional high school math teacher Ken DeBettencourt and West Tisbury School fifth-grader, Christopher Aring-Sharkovitz.
There is also a new vocabulary building seminar for teens and adults where participants can learn a revolutionary method of vocabulary acquisition that will allow them to remember new words for years, instead of just a few weeks.
