I am sitting here thinking about putting a long-sleeved shirt on and it is only August. Today has been rainy and the wind has been chilly but it sure feels good. I know it is not the end of the heat but the relief sure feels great.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week.

Big balloons go out to Derek Avakian who celebrated his day on August 3, Don Mitchell, and Erika Welch who celebrated their day on August 4, and Melanie Rankow, Pam Dolby and Floyd Norton who celebrated on August 5.

Special wishes to Liam Welch who celebrated his first birthday on August 4. Liam is the son of Ryan and Angela Rankow Welch.

This past Sunday was the Scoops 5-kilometer race. The cardiac class that Ralph attends joined in the race as they always do. It is great because the class is mainly men who range from 54 to 85, give or take a few years. I have always given M.J. and Pam a lot of credit for running these classes. These men have such a great relationship and share a lot in common and have the same sense of humor.

Louie Larsen Sr., Donnie Mitchell, Jules BenDavid, Donnie Searle, Wayne West, Tony Gramdowski, Billy Norton and Ralph all met at the Farm Institute where the race began. M.J. and Pam also were there. M.J. was in her car in case of emergency and Pam rode her bike. Some made the whole walk and some did two miles. In all they were strong support for each other. After the race they all went to the Wharf for brunch, where they had healthy sandwiches and a birthday cake for Donnie Mitchell as it was his birthday.

Donna Klingensmith Sherman and her husband Don were here for two weeks for a family reunion. Donna and Don, who live in Carver and Melbourne, Fla., arrived in their motor home and parked in Bea Lawry’s driveway. They enjoyed their visit with Bea and then had a reunion with Donna’s daughter Rena Lutzow from Maryland and all her grandchildren, Tara, Samantha, Danielle and Gina, and Donna’s great-grandchildren, Hayleigh and Brianna.

They also visited with her son Donny and son Mike came over on the Island Queen from Falmouth to visit and spend time with his mother. They also got a visit in with her brother and sister in law Jon and Rita Klingensmith.

Our sympathies go out to Sonny and Cindy Laurent for the loss of Sonny’s mom Betty. Betty was the typical Southern lady who could outtalk anyone. She was one of the sweetest ladies you would ever meet and a very talented crafts artist. She will be missed by many.

Congratulations to Joel and Joann DeRoche on the birth of their daughter. Georgia Marie arrived July 24, weighing 8 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 20 3/4 quarter inches long. Georgia’s grandparents are Pam Cassidy and Mike and Debbie Cassidy, Pricilla and Pete Bettencourt, and Dick and Carol DeRoche.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
