Dancing within the Circle, the fourth annual Aquinnah Wampanoag powwow, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Circle from noon to 6 p.m. Grand entry will be at noon. All tribal members are encouraged to wear their regalia and dance with our four champion dancers or just spend the day with family and friends. VTA buses will stop at the Aquinnah Circle every hour from 7 a.m. through midnight. Another afternoon of fun for the entire family. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for elders and children age five to twelve. Children under five are admitted free. Raffles will be held throughout the day. Vendors will be available for food and native American arts and crafts. Powwow T-shirts will be available.

A reminder: a summer celebration will be held on August 30 at the Aquinnah Public Library from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Latin music by Sol y Canto, the Black Brook Singers and Drums of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), book sale, face painting, a picnic luncheon, art exhibit and a fun day for the family.

On Sept. 4 the library will feature Jessica B. Harris, author of the recently published Martha’s Vineyard Table. She will present and discuss her book with a demonstration.

Zeke is missing from 17 Lighthouse Road. He is a small Abyssinian cat with a gray back and tan belly. He may need a food offering to catch him. Please call Arnold and Norma at 508-645-2292 or 617-262-0478 if you see him. The MSPCA in Edgartown also has been notified.

Thanks to all of my dear friends at the Vineyard Gazette office who assist me on a weekly basis, and a grand thank you to receptionist Kendra Frakes who is always there for me.

The 147th annual Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair was another success despite the economic woes of the world. The sense of community was obvious throughout the weekend. Congratulations to the students of Mandy Tomkins and the Strawberry Fields Family Child Care Center who won third place for their first entry ever in a painting and cutout of their hands with natural vegetables, a squash painted with a squash, a potato painted with a potato, a tomato painted with a tomato. The young student winners are Tobey, Mya, Ellie, Joshua, Amelia, Abriel, and Noah James Manning. Everyone remarked on the realistic portrait of Trip Barnes which was painted by Ann Leggett; who could auction that one? The quilts were amazing as always. The biggest draw was perhaps the pig races. Congratulations to Molly Cournoyer on her four blue ribbons for her incredible floral arrangements. Always nice to see Maurey Dore’s rabbits and hens. Bead lady Gwen Nichols won a blue ribbon for her Vineyard themed booth with her wampum and beach glass jewelry. This year Gwen was assisted by her sister Candace Nichols, nephew Eddie Cisek, and Florida friend Jason Wells. Thanks to Tom Seeman and Marsha Shufrin for their $1 gourmet coffee and bottled water. It was so much fun on Saturday, I had to return on Sunday.

Congratulations to Tyler Bellis and his bride Carrie Anne Vanderhoop who were married in Masset, British Columbia on August 2. Many of Carrie Anne’s family members traveled from Aquinnah to Masset for the week of the celebration. Tyler and Carrie are now in Aquinnah for the week and will have another celebration for those who were unable to attend the ceremony in Masset.

Jamie Hubert has been at her family home overlooking Vineyard Sound for a few days this week. Her mother Hermie remained at their winter home in Mount Vernon, N.Y. James and Jody Hubert also spent a week at their family home

Welcome to James Mahoney and his wife Melissa (Nichols) and their three-year-old daughter Aileen who moved into their new home this month after spending the past few years building. Her parents Marci and Kevan Nichols are now suffering from empty nest syndrome once more in their home. Jill Nichols returned to her home in Kentucky after spending the summer with her parents and working at Cronig’s. Welcome to the newest addition to the Nichols family, Phoebe Suzannah Nichols, who was born on August 14 in Denver. Phoebe arrived home with her parents Kevan and Elizabeth Nichols, making her Vineyard debut on August 23. Of course grandparents Marci and Kevan are thrilled with their new arrival. Cheers to all.

Chief F. Ryan Malonson was transferred to the Boston Center — 1245 Centre Street in Roslindale, MA 02131 this week for a few months of rehabilitation from his orthopedic surgery. He would appreciate cards while he remains at complete bed rest.

Eric Turkington will be honored with a retirement party and pot luck thank you on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the agricultural hall in West Tisbury. Please bring finger foods to share. Beverages will be available. Eric has served our Vineyard community well for the past 20 years and it will be a time of accolades. A special thank you to Eric for his assistance when Carl Widdiss and myself appeared before the Massachusetts legislature in 1997 to testify on the change of name from Gay Head to Aquinnah. He was there to support our efforts that day as he has on so many occasions to represent all of us so well.

Dawn Widdiss returned to Framingham on Wednesday after spending the week with her mother Gladys A. Widdiss and visiting family and friends and the company of brothers Carl and Donnie.

Happy 24th anniversary wishes to Steve and Trudy Garvin as they celebrate on August 31. Happy 42nd anniversary wishes to Conrad and Dolly Noble as they celebrate on Sept. 3. Happy 23rd anniversary wishes to Arthur and Julie (Morrow) Brennan as they party on Sept. 3.

David Cockcroft as he celebrates his special day on August 30 and shares the day with Troy Vanderhoop Sr., Daniel Spitz-Lee and my granddaughter Christina Marie Millman. Pam Melrose will also party on August 30; nice to catch up with Pam when we met at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Wednesday.

A very special happy birthday to Beatrice Gentry who will be 98 on August 31 and shares the day with her niece Cynthia Akins and Todd Vanderhoop.

Ed BenDavid Sr. will party on Sept. 2 — I still have photographs of his 50th birthday party a few years ago. Garth Nance Edwards will observe his special day on Sept. 3.

Rev. Roger H. Spinney will celebrate on Sept. 3. Emerson Mahoney will be 11 on Sept. 4 and shares the day with Paula Belain.

Have a safe and wonderful Labor Day weekend. Be careful in your travels, schools open this week on the Vineyard. This is the time of year when we sit back and reflect on what we missed doing over the past two months and what our plans are for the ensuing winter months. Most of all we wonder where the season went.
