September has slipped away as quick as you can say Jack Frost. We know he is waiting just around the corner but it doesn’t seem possible with this beautiful Indian summer weather. Folks are busy harvesting the last of their vegetables, and berries for canning, and settling into their fall routine as the sun is now setting around 6:30 p.m.

Remember that tomorrow the Living Local Harvest Festival will take place at the Agricultural Hall. Also the antique power show starts at noon. George Hartman, of Panhandle Road, reports that this will be the Antique Power Association’s 21st annual show at the fairgrounds. All owners of antique machinery (gas and steam engines, toys, cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors and machinery, rusty or otherwise) are invited. For more information, call George at 508-693-6039. George, the guru of steam engines, will have his rare 1903 Locomobile steam engine on display and working, as well as a number of other steam engines from the same era. There will be a variety of events at the harvest festival including a special farmers’ market, a potluck supper at 6 p.m. and dancing till 10 p.m.

Just a few years ago, I recall, he misread the chart, got lost, and was unable to finish. He reports that he has made positive progress since then.

Don Evon and his wife Denise Doreen Mount, of Farmington, Conn. and their French poodles Mahido and Camilla vacationed last weekend with Anna and John Alley of State Road. The weather was superb and they went to the beach, canoed, watched sunsets in Menemsha and Denise cooked gourmet dinners. They belatedly celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary Saturday night.

Nearly 150 people gathered at the Agricultural Hall last Sunday to thank Rep. Eric Turkington for his twenty years of service as our representative in the General Court. Several speakers lauded Eric and he thanked everyone for supporting him. A wonderful potluck reception followed the formal ceremony and everyone had a chance to talk with Eric and share their favorite stories. Barbara Day of Willow Tree Hollow organized the affair.

Joan and Marian’s lasting friendship began when they were six years old in Crestwood, N.Y., and they had many adventures together as they grew up. The Vineyard holds wonderful memories for Joan of visiting her grandparents at their Meras family home in Oak Bluffs.
