Tim Madden of Nantucket won the hotly contested race for Cape and Islands state representative Tuesday, beating out three other opponents including Dan Larkosh, a West Tisbury attorney who fought hard for the post. At 11 p.m., after a historic Presidential election that saw an extremely high turnout across across the Island, Mr. Madden emerged a clear winner with a total of 9,521 votes district-wide.

Mr. Larkosh carried Falmouth and five of six Vineyard towns (Mr. Madden won Chilmark) with a total of 7,486 votes, but Nantucket, which backed Mr. Madden with 4,968 votes, put their hometown candidate over the top. Two other candidates, Melissa Freitag of Falmouth and Jacob Ferreira of Vineyard Haven, received 3,391 and 3,005 votes respectively. Ms. Freitag did well in her home town, trailing only Mr. Larkosh with 2,645 votes.

More local election results will be posted on the Gazette Web site as they become available.
