Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club opens its annual Fall Shotgun Shoot to the public on Sunday, Nov. 30. Everyone is eligible for prizes in this marksmanship competition the day before the shotgun deer season opens.
Events are highly competitive: the Egg Shoot at 50 yards draws crowds of participants and spectators. The Standing Deer Target event is a 50-yard competition for slug shotguns with both open and scoped sights. Prizes will be awarded for both categories. And the Over the Shoulder Trap Event is for the best 5-out-of-5 shots. These last two events will determine the club’s 2008 Top Gun Champion and the member shooter receives a personally embroidered Top Gun Jacket.
A small entry fee will be charged. Spectators are welcome to watch for free. The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. This day is open to all hunters on the Island so they may sight in and calibrate their shotguns for the up-coming deer season in a safe and controlled atmosphere.
