Kathy and Paul Domitrovich, the owners of Lola’s Southern Seafood restaurant and nightclub in Oak Bluffs, will close their doors after 15 seasons of doing business on the Vineyard.

In a statement released Monday, the owners announced that they will sell the restaurant to Doug and Leslie Hewson, owners of the Mediterranean in Vineyard Haven.

“We kept it up for 15 years,” Mrs. Domitrovich said in the statement. “We stayed loyal to our customers, just like they did to us — because we know how it works. We got the place started, but the Island kept it going.”

Mr. and Mrs. Domitrovich were a familiar presence at the large restaurant situated on Beach Road in the Harthaven section of Oak Bluffs. Mrs. Domitrovich could always be found in the kitchen overseeing the preparation of New Orleans-style dishes such as jambalaya and seafood etouffee.

Mr. Domitrovich was usually in the dining room, greeting customers at the front door or performing his fabled rendition of Happy Birthday to customers on their special day. He would approach the table with his candle-topped hat, glittery vest and sparkling candle that illuminated the entire dining room. He would boldly announce to the entire dining room he was looking for a birthday girl or boy, and then ask the patron his age before breaking into his one-liner: “That’s how old I was when I was your age!”

Mr. and Mrs. Domitrovich always emphasized their customers, providing space for fund-raisers on short notice, serving food late into the night when other restaurants were long closed and taking time to explain the strangely costumed mannequin in the center of the dining room (used to display the ceremonial garb Mr. Domitrovich wore during the Mardi Gras parade several year ago).

Lola’s offered live music every night during the summer, employing local bands as well as bringing in talent from off-Island. In recent years, it became a hot spot for the older crowd looking to avoid the scene on Circuit avenue.

“We’ve been in this business for more than 30 years, and it’s time for Paul to take a break,” Mrs. Domitrovich said in the statement. “I’ll never stop, I can’t. But I think I’m ready to find a new niche, to take on a new challenge.”

The restaurant won’t stay empty for long. On April 9 the space will reopen under the ownership of Mr. and Mrs. Hewson, who were looking for a new space after their lease expired last year.
