Things are looking bright for many Vineyard high school athletic teams early in this spring sports season. There were fewer games and matches this week due to April vacation.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The team led by coach Betsy Dripps continued its dominance last Thursday with a 13-3 drubbing of Fairhaven on the road. With the win, the Vineyarders remained undefeated and moved to 6-0 on the season.
Niki Alexander led with three goals, while Kate Cecilio had a pair of goals and an assist. Hayley Pierce had two goals and two assists; Molly Fischer had a pair of goals and Anna Jurczyk had three assists. The Vineyard girls got out to a 6-1 half-time lead and never looked back.
The team was off this week and will return to action Monday on the road against Bridgewater-Raynham, the start of a tough stretch in which the team plays four road games in just five days. The team plays at home again May 3 against Falmouth.
Baseball
After a promising start, the baseball team has dropped five games in a row to run their record to 2-7.
Coach Gary Simmons said his team has hit and pitched well, but has been prone to costly errors leading to big innings for opponents. “We have played well overall, our defense has just been shaky. When you make errors that lead to four, five or more runs in an inning, it is hard to overcome,” the coach said.
The Vineyard boys played well against Bishop Feehan at home Saturday, and were tied 4-4 in the fourth inning. But some timely hitting by Feehan came along with several errors, and the Vineyarders lost 12-5.
In another home game Monday, visiting Sandwich scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and continued to pile it on through the game, winning easily 17-9.
Coach Simmons said despite the recent cold streak, several of his players are having good seasons. Senior co-captain Tad Gold is batting over .400 while Ben Ciciora has both pitched well and played well as a position player.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The boys’ team has also had a strong to start the season, defeating Fairhaven last Thursday 13-3 and beating Lowell on Tuesday at home 7-2. In between, the Vineyarders lost to Barnstable last Friday 15-7.
In the Barnstable game, the Vineyard jumped out to an early 3-2 lead, and the two teams exchanged leads throughout the first quarter. But the Red Raiders reeled off four unanswered goals in the second quarter to make it 6-3 at the half. Four more goals in the third quarter put the game away.
Erik Dolliver, Liam O’Callahan, Max Conley, Antone Silvia and Brooks Billingham all had goals.
On Tuesday, in overcast and rainy conditions, the Vineyard rushed out to a 4-1 lead at the half thanks to a pair of goals by Conley and single scores from Billingham and Dolliver. Dolliver and Billingham each scored again in the second half; the result was a 7-2 win.
The team plays at home Tuesday against Bishop Connolly.
Boys’ Tennis
Despite being without starters Nik Wojtkielo and Dylan Hutchinson, the boys won in straight sets against Sturgis last Friday at Cape Cod Community College, led by outstanding performances from number one singles player Andrew McHugh and number two singles player Reid Yennie.
McHugh easily bested opponent Max Young (6-1, 6-1) while Yennie had no problems with Brendon Eddy (6-1, 6-1).
Win Grimm and Grant McCarthy took the first doubles match of the day, (6-3, 6-4), while teammates Kyle Moran and Grant Meacham were perfect (6-0, 6-0) against opponents Andrew Bell and Myiclos Greenberg.
The team ran up against a tough opponent in Bishop Feehan at home on Saturday, but were able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead on the strength of wins by McHugh and Yennie. Bishop Feehan took control after that, winning all three remaining matches, including an exciting if not grueling singles match between the Vineyard’s Zach Rabin against opponent Sean Singer.
Rabin won the first set (7-5), but dropped the final two (6-2, 6-3).
On the doubles side, Bishop Feehan’s combination of Mark Gwin and Matt Boland proved too much for Grimm and Grant McCarthy, while David Pinsonheault and Owen Lynch beat the Vineyard’s duo of Kyle Moran and Thomas Tilton-Heylin.
The Vineyard’s record now stands at 4-3.
