The spring flowers and many trees are in bloom most everywhere. The 87 degree weather on Sunday was not only delightful but just what the plants needed. Today is the first of May when baskets may be hung on your door and May pole celebrations and dances announce the arrival of warmer weather and send old Jack Frost on vacation. The baseball field on Sunday hosted a youth soccer match and the tennis courts were also busy. Short sleeve shirts and shorts were the clothing of choice. Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, is celebrated on Monday.

Baron Ludwig Von Ochs, of Vienna, Austria, known to us as Peter, arrives today for a three month visit. He will again be buzzing around in his yellow car.

Tom Hodgson, of Tiasquam Road, proudly reports that his daughter Darcy Neago gave birth to a baby boy, Tristan Robert, on Sunday in Seattle. His father is Jason Neago and it is the couple’s first child. Tom reports that Tristan is healthy, happy and hearty. He also says that males were scarce in the last generation of his family, but all is on track to reverse those proportions in this new age group.

Angela Grant, Vineyard Transit Authority administrator, reports that the VTA bus schedule will be gradually changing to the summer season beginning tomorrow. She expects an increase in ridership due to the poor economic climate. At this time, the VTA will offer extended service on Fridays and Saturdays until Memorial Day weekend when it will also include Sundays. The passenger count increased during the past three months of the winter schedule. The new schedules have been released and contain a range of information and a new system map.

Dan and Elaine Pace, of Pond Road, proudly welcome their first grandchild, Cora Marie Barclay, who was born on April 16 to their daughter Rebecca and her husband, Chris. Rebecca and Chris were married on the Vineyard two years ago and now live in Winchester.

Bob and Barbara Day, of Willow Tree Hollow, report that they returned home last weekend after spending six weeks in Los Angeles. They went out their to greet the arrival of their ninth grandchild. Baby Lucy arrived the morning of April 6; her parents are their daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Churchill. Lucy joins her brothers Freddy and Bobby. Barbara reports that the weather was wonderful. Bob took her to the cinema twice and they walked around the neighborhood.

Anna Alley, of State Road, returned home last Saturday night after spending a week in Hobe Sound, Fla. She stayed with Denise Mount and her sister Pam at her condo. They were joined by Richard Galler of Boston. Anna reports that she had a wonderful, relaxing time.

Sal Laterra, of Providence, R.I., celebrated his 82nd birthday Monday night at a dinner in New York city. He and Phyllis spent the weekend down in the Big Apple. Phyllis took him to a Broadway play, South Pacific. Telephone messages of good wishes were received from several Vineyarders. They did some shopping, visited with friends and returned to Providence on Thursday. Sal hopes that his schedule will allow him to spend the weekend on Music street.

Rosalee McCullough was at her Music street home over the weekend. Her son Geoffrey along with his children, Louisa, Henry and Nellie, were with her. David is back in New York city fighting a battle about a development near the famous Brooklyn Bridge. She reports that they will be here for the summer beginning next month.

Paul Garcia, of State Road, returned home earlier this week after spending a few days visiting with his parents, Abel and Louise, at their home in Upper St. Clair, Pa.

Members of the garden club and several volunteers were busy last weekend clearing the grounds at the Old Mill on Edgartown Road. They are preparing for an active club season with several summer programs.

Linda Baughman, who had been in San Francisco on business, came upon the opportunity to fly to China and Tibet. She will return on May 6, and you can be sure she will have stories to tell about her adventures.

Walter and Lee Deacoupolous, of Providence, R.I. came down to visit with Phyllis Meras last weekend. They at one time all worked for the Providence Journal newspaper.

Arsen Hambardzumian and his wife Nicole Alley, of East Taunton, came down to visit her parents last weekend. Arsen had several septic inspections to make in Vineyard Haven and Nicole helped her parents do some needed spring cleaning.

Chantale Legare reports that she will be serving Italian food tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grange Hall. She says it is guaranteed to be an absolutely delicious meal. The menu prepared by caterer Karen Dutton consists of lasagna Bolognese, vegetarian lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, Caesar salad and garlic bread. There will be a buffet of desserts and sparkling water, lemonade and red wine will be available. The event is a fundraiser for the fifth graders’ Shenandoah expedition this summer. The complete dinner is $15 for adults; family maximum is $40.

The Vineyard Playwrights Studio will hold their inaugural meeting at the library on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Membership in the group is free and open to playwrights with works of any length, theme or degree of completion. On May 5, 1946 The Grange announced at their next meeting they would observe Children’s Night on the second floor of the Agricultural Hall. All children in town were invited and those of all Grange members as well. Refreshments were served by Lillian Magnuson, Alma Benson and Helen O’Donnell. A penny sale also was held at the home of George and Lillian Magnuson the next week. All the proceeds of the sale were given to the parsonage repair fund.
