Wampum and Felt is a weekend art show opening this afternoon at the bank on Beetlebung Corner. It features Joan Lelacheur with her latest wampum creations and Heather Hall with her felted fine silk art. The reception begins at 4 p.m. this afternoon.

The Lighthouse at Aquinnah Circle will be open for Mother’s Day from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free for the evening. The lighthouse will not be open if it is raining. Lighthouse keepers Joan Lelacheur and her husband Richard Skidmore will be on hand to answer your questions during the tour. Happy Mother’s Day!

The annual Aquinnah town meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at the town hall. Voting will be on Wednesday, May 13, with polls open from noon to 7 p.m.

The Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group Annual Gala Benefit will be held on May 14. Please check the listing elsewhere in this edition.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will be sponsoring an Environmental Health Consumer Expo 2009 at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown on May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Speakers will include Jeff May on mold and moisture in your home; Ali Berlow and Noli Taylor regarding locally grown food; Alison Hinckley of the Centers for Disease Control reporting on Lyme disease and tularemia; Robin Dodson on reducing pollution at home; Bret Stearns, the director of the tribal natural resources department, speaking on the tribal environmental programs and the Vineyard watersheds; and Bill Wilcox, Martha’s Vineyard Commission water resource planner, on the Island Plan Water Resources Group. There will be environmentally friendly giveaways and great door prizes.

Condolences to the family and close friends of Robert Caldwell of Chilmark who passed away on April 4. He was the father of Duncan Caldwell of Aquinnah and Paris, Dr. Edward Caldwell, Susanna Linfield and Jennifer Fisher. A memorial service will be held in August.

Get well wishes to Ronald Jeffers who has been hospitalized off-Island for the past several weeks.

Bill and Joan Kistner returned to their home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Monday after spending four days with our grandson Noah James Manning and his parents, Paul and Theresa. We enjoyed family dinners and an early Mother’s Day brunch at the Harbor View Hotel on Sunday.

A very special happy birthday wish to our youngest sister Jyl Manning, who will now become a Tribal Elder — gosh how did that happen so quickly? Anyway, she will party on May 12.
