The Chilmark farmers must be rejoicing this week for all the rain that has fallen. If the seeds are planted, they should be sprouting soon. The shadbushes along the side of the roads popped into bloom this week and that always meant (to my grandfather, anyway) that the herring were running. I wonder if they are?

First of all, let’s review some dates you might want to make note of before May gets away from us altogether. The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s baseball booster club pasta dinner and silent auction is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs on Vineyard avenue. Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance by calling Cody Coutinho at 508-645-3586.

The Wampanoag Tribe will host an environmental health consumer expo on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown. Admission is free and there will be door prizes.

Dr. Michael J. Fogarty will speak at the Chilmark library on Wednesday, May 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. His subject will be the ecology and management of the Northeast Continental Shelf. The Menemsha fisheries development fund and the Friends of the Chilmark Library sponsor this program. The public is invited free of charge.

The Vineyard Playhouse and the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association will present The Fabulists, a theatre troupe for children, on Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at the playhouse on 24 Church street in Vineyard Haven. They will perform BlackBeard’s Back, a funny play appropriate for children of all ages. This play is of special interest to Chilmarkers because it is a historical fiction piece that takes place in Chilmark and includes references to the City of Columbus, the ill-fated passenger ship that went down off Aquinnah long ago.

News has reached us of an unfortunate fall suffered by Alice Childs of New York city, who has been a summer resident of Chilmark for many years. She is at Mt. Sinai hospital being treated for a broken hip. Her many Chilmark friends wish her a speedy recovery.

Welcome back to South Road seasonal resident, Emily Gadd, here for the summer from her home in Bozeman, Mt.

Chilmark’s resident astrologer, Arlan Wise, is home from California where she attended a retreat for astrologers hosted by the Organization of Professional Astrology. The conference was at Asilomar, a retreat center on 75 acres of state park in Pacific Grove, near Monterey. Arlan lead a writing workshop for astrologers and gave a talk on the unique aspects of having an astrology practice in a small rural community.

Congratulations to Geoffrey McGhee, son of Steve McGhee of Chilmark, who has been named a recipient of a John S. Knight Fellowship for the 2008-2009 academic year at Stanford in California. Geoff is currently a multimedia editor with Le Monde newspaper in Paris. He will research and develop data visualization tools for online journalists while at Stanford. Geoff will return to the United States for his wedding to Sara Tottefson in Seattle on the Labor Day weekend before starting his studies at Stanford.

Mary Jane Pease of South Road wants to remind us that volunteers are very much needed at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard in Edgartown. There is much work to be done and many hands are welcome. If you can spare some time, please call them at 508-627-8662. She also suggests that donations of money are very necessary at this time. Your checks may be made out to the County of Dukes County with the words animal shelter on the check.

The women’s symposium last Saturday was a big success, as it usually is, and now they are announcing that they will no longer send out postcards of their upcoming dates, so please may sure to note that the next symposium will be on Nov. 7 and also sign up for their e-mail list. Their address is: cwsymp@gmail.com.
