Chilmark is lush and green with lots of flowering shrubs both in gardens and in the wild along the roadsides. A real treat to our winter-tired eyes! And, I am sure, a challenge to all gardeners to get moving!

An early riser can overhear some interesting and colorful conversations among the bird life in our skies these days. Oh, to really know what they are saying!

Spring cleaning took on new meaning this week when a group of able-bodied men with some heavy equipment under the direction of the selectmen spent some hours cleaning up the bulkhead dock in preparation for a busy fishing season. It all has a better photo-op look, and I am sure will make for easier access to the waterfront. Where did that big antique anchor come from?

My first announcement is, unfortunately, a cancellation. There will be no performance by the Fabulists at the Vineyard Playhouse on May 16. We hope to hear that it is to be rescheduled soon. Check with your local librarians.

We send condolences to the family and many friends of Henry F. Burkin of Chilmark who died on May 1. Henry was a much liked and active member of the Chilmark community, and he was a part of many all-Island activities. He served on town boards and was well known on the waterfront for his boating and fishing abilities. His friends will miss his bright good nature and enthusiasm for life. A graveside service will be held on May 30 at Abel’s Hill Cemetery at 2 p.m. to which we are all invited.

We send condolences to the friends and family of Robert G. Caldwell Jr. who died on April 4. He, with his wife, Ruth, lived many years in Chilmark. They first came to the Vineyard in 1950 and from that time he made many friends and managed to find time for Chilmark in an otherwise busy life of great accomplishment. His family invites all to a memorial service on August 8 at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery at 9 a.m.

The Chilmark library will host Cynthia Riggs of West Tisbury, author of mysteries set on Martha’s Vineyard, on Wednesday, May 20, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Friends of the Chilmark Library sponsor these weekly programs.

The Chilmark Community Church will hold a yard and plant sale on Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parish hall rain or shine. They will offer for sale vegetable and herb seedlings, houseplants and perennials and there will be collectibles, books and Ethel’s jams.

Susan E. Thomas will be the guest preacher at the Chilmark Community Church on May 24 at 9 a.m. She has both a master of divinity and a master of theology degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Georgia and she has preached to congregations in Georgia and Massachusetts.

Congratulations to Betsy Larsen as she celebrates the 40th year of her fish market on the dock at Menemsha. Cheers from us all!

And a small cheer for Over South Antiques celebrating the 35th year on Basin Road. (If there is anyone who doesn’t know — the shop is where to find me when I am not writing this column!)

We all send three cheers to Kate Murray and her drama department at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. They have won an invitation to be representatives from the United States at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland for 2010. Those who follow the theatre and its many avenues know that the Edinburgh festival is serious professional theatre. We are excited for our hometown director, Kate Poole Murray of Chilmark and for her hard-working actors.

There will be some fund-raising activities planned to help send the troupe to Edinburgh. The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Pac Rats will present an Evening of Edibles and Entertainment at the Yard in Chilmark on Saturday, May 30, at 6 p.m. The evening will consist of a cocktail hour, dinner, desserts, a silent auction and several performances. Please call 508-693-1033, extension 250, for more information.

Vineyard Haven will host their annual Memorial Day picnic at the Tashmoo Spring Pumping Station on State Road in Vineyard Haven on Monday, May 25, from noon to 4 p.m. The Flying Elbows will be there to provide bluegrass music for their 28th consecutive appearance at the picnic. Tristan Israel and friends will provide more music and there will be grilling chefs to help with food. This is a longtime, all-Island get-together attended by many from all towns. Thanks to the Tisbury picnic planners, we are all invited again this year. In case of rain, the picnic will be on the following Sunday, May 31.

The Galley is open for business now next to the Menemsha Market, which will also be opening this weekend.

Congratulations to Carol Brown Goldberg, Chilmark seasonal resident and renowned artist whose works on paper will be shown at the Osuna Gallery in Bethesda, Md. The show will open on May 30 when there will be a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. and run thru July 31. I am sure Carol and her husband, Hank, will find time for their summer home on Peaked Hill and their familiar boat, the Banjo, as the season comes along.
