A Martha’s Vineyard dance crew led by choreographer Kelly Peters rocked a Times Square Hard Rock Cafe in a national dance competition sponsored by Clearasil.

The skin-care giant hosted the Pimple Blocker Battle, a dance-off between five dance groups from around the country. The competition was designed as a promotion for Clearasil’s new Ultra Pimple Blocker Pen.

The Vineyard team, dubbed the CompleXion Crew, was made up of dancers Alise Haigazian, Jessica Francis, Jessica Donahough, Evan Hall, Grant Meacham, Zion Morris and Ana Thibodeau.

The CompleXion Crew was the first group chosen to move forward into round two of the competition. They triumphed in the second round, beating out two other dance crews for the Clearasil Dance Crew title. With the title came a $10,000 prize package and a year-long contract with Clearasil.

“[CompleXion Crew] was definitely the most raw crew. Everyone really performed at a professional level . . . They executed [the routine] perfectly. There were no mistakes and I love when that happens,” said Mr. Peters.

The adventure began when celebrity choreographer George (Geo) Hubela of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew contacted Mr. Peters about the competition, shortly before the February auditions, to see if he had a crew interested in competing.

At the time, Mr. Peters was working in New York, and one of his Vineyard dancers had also relocated to the city. To stage rehearsals for the competition, the group had to reassemble on the Island and make the most of every minute of preparation.

“We had about a couple of weeks to prepare, about two weeks,” said Mr. Peters. He was given a mix of music and time requirements to follow in the routine. To fulfill these guidelines, he was forced to make last-minute adjustments to the choreography. Making matters worse, he lost a dancer shortly before the competition, and had to readjust the routine accordingly.

The competition was held at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square on April 7. The event was hosted by actress Michelle Trachtenberg and featured celebrity judges Alyson Stoner and Drew Lachey. The judges voted candidates into the second round of the competition, but the ultimate winners were chosen by America. Voting was open online for a month before Clearasil named the CompleXion Crew the winning team.

“I’m extremely proud, because I know how much time we had to work with. I never had [the entire crew] in the same room until the last rehearsal,” said Mr. Peters.

The $10,000 prize will be used for marketing and promotions, travel and public relations. The date of the awards ceremony has yet to be announced.
