Island police had a busy weekend.
Oak Bluffs police responded to 72 calls for service from early Friday morning to late Sunday night and made six arrests.
Just after 7 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a report of a man on County Road seriously bleeding from the head. After speaking with the victim, police learned he had been hit in the head several times with a brick by a man who then fled the scene.
The responding officers issued a general broadcast to locate the assailant who was last seen driving a motor vehicle. At approximately 8:20 p.m. officers spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the assailant’s car and tried to stop him. The driver led police to a residence on Front street, where they arrested Andre Caraneda, 42, and charged him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
Just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, police were called by a taxi driver who reported a fight between two individuals on Washington avenue. Upon arrival, police were approached by one of the male combatants who started yelling and swearing. Police arrested Carlos Johnson, 22, of Vineyard Haven, on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
At 1:45 a.m. on Saturday police placed a New Jersey man into protective custody in the downtown area after officers observed him in a clearly intoxicated state. The man was unable to tell officers where he was staying for the evening.
Just after 3 a.m., police were called to a private home by an alarmed resident who reported an unidentified and confused male had entered his home. Upon arrival police found a 19-year-old male who was intoxicated and unsure of his whereabouts.
The young man was placed in protective custody and not charged criminally. The relieved homeowner thanked the officers for a quick response.
Just before 4 p.m. on Saturday police responded to a report of shoplifting in a Circuit avenue store. After a brief investigation police discovered that two females had stolen several items from three different stores.
The women reportedly used a baby carriage with two infant children inside to hide the items they were stealing.
Melissa Boyd, 19, of Edgartown was arrested and charged with shoplifting; the other woman, Michelle Plesser, 22, of Vineyard Haven, was issued a summons for shoplifting.
On Sunday at around 11 a.m. police arrested Asa French, 23, of Edgartown for assault and battery.
West Tisbury
On Friday police arrested Francisco Jose Ramos, 48, of Vineyard Haven for operating a motor vehicle without a license. On Saturday police responded to a minor motor vehicle accident on Lorring Lane at about 3:20 p.m.; there were no arrests or citations.
Just before 7 p.m. on Friday police responded to a call of a burglary on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road. The reporting party said someone had stolen a sailboat mast from a shed on his property; no other items were stolen.
Police said the boom was unique because it had several U.S. Navy symbols on it, and had added sentimental value for the owner. The investigation is ongoing.
