Trying to find a summer rental on the Vineyard is still a daunting task.

Thank you to those who have taken me in over the past two weeks: Paul, Theresa and Noah Manning; Roxane Ackerman; Garth and Ollie Edwards for their overwhelming generosity and kindness in providing me with the entire east wing on Wauwompaque; and to our sister Jyl where I shall rest for the next six weeks. Of course, efforts have been more difficult when you have a silly cat Kate tagging along with you. Even Kate has been lost on several occasions over the past two weeks but when she waits long enough, I show up to rescue her. Oh, this continuing saga.

Sherente Harris and his brother Nkeke Harris were the weekend guests of Woody and Jamie Vanderhoop. The young boys enjoyed their first ferry boat ride, the Cliffs, Noah Manning’s birthday party, cookout with family and friends, the Flying Horses, and as much as they could fit in over one weekend in Aquinnah. They were accompanied to the Vineyard by Jamie’s parents.

The Old South Road neighborhood association will be holding their fifth annual 4th of July children’s parade again this year. We will have the assistance of chief Randhi P. Belain, who will provide security and lead the parade in which Aquinnah town officials will officially participate. Jim Vercruyssee will arrange for the Aquinnah fire truck to arrive. Kristin Mannion and her husband H.P. Goldfield will provide face painting and beach treasures. Arlen Roth will supply his antique automobiles and drivers. Dr. Ron Low and his wife Cynthia will decorate the “float.” The Donahue-Pattons will help with face painting. Dr. Steven Kaufman and his wife will provide music at the reviewing stand. The Schillers and the Donnellys will help bury treasures for the treasure hunt that follows the parade. Sue Jensen will wear her French champion swimming medals. Tom and Christine Murphy and their children Kate and Tim will provide flags and a reviewing stand for one and all. The Norkus family will provide the birthday boy. The Bazzys will drive the red Jeep. The Batzers will bring the Thing, aka the Orange Thing!! The Fosters will bring the motorcycle. The Paul Manning family will of course participate. The Vanderhoops will bring Amos and Izzy. The Vickerys will bring their grandchildren.

The parade will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, with a rain date of Sunday, July 5. The team will still need volunteers to help bury treasures on Philbin Beach at 9 a.m. Children should arrive at the Goldfield-Mannion home for face painting and flagging at 10 a.m. Floats, cars, and bikes should line up at the top of the hill beginning at 10 a.m. All donations of flags, toys, and decorations are encouraged. Please feel free to bring children and their families. Any and all questions should be addressed to Thomas Murphy, Esq. or to our beloved Founder, Kristin Mannion.

Rob Schiller is responsible for the weather! See you there.

Get well wishes to Ronald B. Jeffers who was readmitted to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital over this past week.

William Kistner and his wife Joan returned to their home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Thursday, after spending the past week with our grandson Noah James Manning and his parents, Paul and Theresa. They arrived to assist with Noah’s party and to spend the week with him. While here, they enjoyed the opportunity to oversee some of the footings and foundation of the new Manning home.

Noah James Manning enjoyed his third birthday celebration on Saturday at the tribal building while entertaining 20 of his closest friends and playmates amid the balloons and Legos. This year the theme was Lego Land (due to his visit to Lego Land in San Diego during his April vacation). Lunch was of course catered by Quitsa Cuisine, which included Theresa and Kendra’s famous chowder for the adults and child-size sandwiches and treats for the toddlers. Thank you to Laura Beckman for the beautiful and delicious Lego birthday cake baked at the Black Dog Bakery. Riley and Luke, children of Craig Yuhas and Heather Neal, loaned Noah their bounce house trampoline for the afternoon, which was once again a favorite for the young ones. Noah’s tractor and trucks were fun on the front lawn as well. He received many wonderful gifts from his family and friends and not one duplicate of any of the treasures. Everyone received a Lego Land gift box on their way home. Needless to say, a grand time was enjoyed by one and all. Thank you to Tobias Vanderhoop for keeping the tribal building open for one and all to enjoy.

It was wonderful to see Teri Morse, her son Michael and his family, who were here over the weekend from their homes in Acton.

Robert Rosenberg and Mary Wolfson have arrived this week for their summer sojourn at the Rosenberg home overlooking Menemsha Pond.

Zachary has returned from his eighth grade trip to Bridgewater, England with his West Tisbury School classmates and chaperones. Faith is still celebrating her Head Girl Dancer status at the Children’s Museum Indian Day Celebration.

Douglas Vanderhoop and his wife Linda and their granddaughter Brooklyn arrived on Friday from their winter home in Fort Duchesne, Utah to spend some time at their Aquinnah family home. They are awaiting the arrival of more family members over the next few weeks.

Heath Widdiss and his son Cameron were weekend guests of his uncle Carl Widdiss and Pam Glavin while here to visit with Gladys A. Widdiss and to attend the Aquinnah power cruise.
