A concert of new work by Michelle Mola and Dudley Brooks, two innovative choreographers chosen from an international pool of over 100 applicants, opens this weekend at the Yard on Middle Road in Chilmark.

Mr. Brooks’ work has a sense of the ridiculous; he’s funny. This weekend, Brooks will premiere D was a Dancer, featuring Edward Lear nonsense poems set to music, and A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Dance — the dance world will never be the same!

Michelle Mola is the first dancer to receive a fellowship in choreography and performance from the Annenberg Foundation. She has developed films, founded The Public Dance Theater, and received the Gluck Community Service Fellowship to combine dance and social outreach, allowing the company to perform in nursing homes, psychiatric wards and the Rikers Island Maximum Security Prison.

Yard artistic director Wendy Taucher calls the two a study in opposites. “[Michelle’s] work is breathtakingly technical; she explores movement with skill and originality. Dudley [has a] completely unique repertory that combines theatricality with high comic timing and a sense of the absurd. His recent performance at the Tisbury School was called the ‘best ever’ by faculty member Cathy Weiss,” she said.

Tonight kicks off a Bennington College weekend in honor of Yard founder Patricia Nanon, with special events Saturday for Bennington graduates.

Performances tonight and Saturday are at 8 p.m. Sunday’s show is at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $15 up to $100. Saturday, June 27, there is a free family matinee at 4 p.m. For details, call 508-645-9662 or visit online dancetheyard.org.
