There’s a rumbling among the denizens. Town dump stickers, the ones you put on your car windows, have been raised from $5 annually to $25. Compost dumping — leaves, twigs, Christmas trees are no longer free, $2 per barrel or $25 per truckload. Call or write your town hall, department of public works, or selectmen. Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m only telling you.

When my Lil’ Bit was missing a few weeks back, after our reunion, I went and took down every poster I put up, called every agency and animal clinic and reported her found. Wouldn’t it be nice if the people who put up so many yard sale signs returned and removed them after the sale was over? Just asking.

After much preparation, pomp and circumstance, Bruce and Dolly Campbell have welcomed their grandson Silas from New Zealand. Of course his parents, Seth Campbell and wife Jacqui, made the long trip with the seven-month-old. Silas is cute, cuddly, and smiley. I caught his act down at the thrift shop one day. He was supposed to work the next day as well, but fell asleep. Silas is here for a three-week sojourn. Stop by the thrift shop for a viewing.

Becca Dunham filled me in on her wonderful junior year studying in Heidelberg, Germany. Becca is at U-Mass Amherst and participated in an exchange program with the state of Baden-Wurtemburg. She lived with German and international students in campus housing. Most of her classes were in the German language. She found time to take a few German culture lectures as well. During a school break, Becca traveled to Great Britain and Ireland. She managed lots of weekend trips: she caught up with Mom Carol in Paris, ventured to Italy, checked out Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and had a wondrous New Year’s in Amsterdam. As you know, Becca is a dedicated worker at Bryn Walker on Main street. In Slovakia, she met up with Ivana, who also worked at Bryn Walker some summers ago. Ivana is well and says hi to all her Island friends. She finished college and is now teaching English in Budapest. Becca recommends the international experience to everyone, emphasizes the joy of learning another language, and adored the ability to travel. Becca thanks everyone who helped get her there.

You probably have your ticket by now but, if not, call 508-627-8737 to see if there’s room for you at the Grill at noon on Tuesday, July 28, when our chapter of the NAACP has a luncheon honoring three of our best, Dr. Lorna Andrade, Marie Araujo, and Carrie Tankard. You needn’t be an NAACP member to attend and celebrate with us, but sure consider joining.

Our library presents scholar Dr. David J. Silverman at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, speaking on The Death and Rebirth of the Wampanoag Language. This is a continuing part of our Island history series; it is free and you are all invited.

This being the season for all you artists and art lovers, here’s a rundown of up-coming events in the arts. Delightful Elise Ryan is holding a trunk show of her Italian signed ceramics, spices, and other treasures at the Dove Cottage, 647 Main street, on Sunday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 410-258-8237 or 508-693-6204 for more information and telephone orders. Don’t miss this talented lady and her exquisite taste in items for the home.

The reception with live music from 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow night at the Louisa Gould Gallery on our Main street welcomes the new works of Joan Kennedy, Ovid Ward, and Sherry Blalock. I’ll see you there!

The talented Doug Peckham is opening his studio at 56 Pennacook avenue in Oak Bluffs for a show and sale, tomorrow and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See his magic in watercolors, pastels, acrylics, pen and ink, and photography.

Leslie Baker presents her landscapes and studies at the Shaw Cramer Gallery today through August 6. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Edgartown Whaling Church is the site of a great concert on Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m. by Mark Alan Lovewell, spinning his stories and songs about Shipwrecks, Pirates, and Mermaids. Mark’s always-welcome concert is a fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and the Wampanoag Tribe’s Bay Scallop Restoration Project.

Taffy McCarthy and Linda Berg have done it again! Taffy has directed and choreographed, Linda is the musical director, of Summer of ’42 presented by Island Theater Workshop at the Katharine Cornell Theatre. It began last week and is on, 8 p.m., tonight, tomorrow night, July 27, July 29, July 30, and August 2. Tickets are $20. It stars some of your favorite Island actors and many of my favorite former students. I’ll see you there.

My personal favorite, artist Angel, has opened a new, fully licensed tattoo parlor in the arts district of Oak Bluffs, just across from PikNik. Angel’s wonderful and wild paintings are also on display and for sale. Now, tattooing’s not my thing; I cried when my ears were pierced. But those of you braver and younger than I may visit his shop Tuesdays through Saturdays. The name is Amity Custom Ink.

How pleased I was to see Island Music, on our Main street, is now offering guitar, drum, and piano lessons in the backroom. Certainly these are arts we all can work on.

Our sincere condolences go out to Anthony Cardoza and his family on the death of Anthony’s cousin, Daniel Cardoza. You have probably seen the news by now. Daniel, who had just turned 22, dropped Anthony at the last boat last Sunday and was stabbed to death at a gas station in Sagamore. This kind of death, useless and cruel, upsets me as do our driving accident deaths for our young on Island. Pray for the family.

Condolences also go out to the family and friends (and who did not consider him a friend?) of Walter Cronkite. Definitely, the end of an era he defined so well for us.

Wishes go out to Martha Dunham, recuperating from a broken ankle.

Anniversary bouquets go out to Ed and Lil Colligan on July 28.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Lilly Clark today. Tomorrow is shared by Larry Conroy and Tom Colligan the younger. July 26 is a party for Sal Esposito, Amy Hambrecht, Doug Liman, Martha Chappell, Sarah Swift, Kellie Burtch, and Rory Elizabeth Mayhew. July 27 honors Bruce Hunter, Vicki Burroughs, Buntie Bahal, Megan Honey, Connie Campbell, Theo Cowett, Caleb Enos, and Michael Cobban. July 28 is for Beth Serusa, Andrew Chappell, Sarah Moreis, Keiko Corey, and Alan Campbell. July 29 is claimed by Chris Cimeno, Michael Desrosiers, Gerry Franzago, and Doug Sabin. And on July 30 Ashley Medeiros, Diane Hartmann, and Jonathan Alexander Gardella take the cake. Many happy returns.
