Chilmark is awaiting August . . . it always comes before we are really ready but maybe it will bring better weather and, somewhere, a few minutes for us to catch our breath! It will be an August to remember so let’s get ready for it and get ready to make some memories.

We send best wishes to Jonathan Mayhew, who is recovering from serious surgery performed in Boston last week. We look forward to seeing him back in Chilmark and on the mend.

We send best wishes to Rene Fischer, who had some health problems this week. We all hope she is feeling better soon.

Peter and Amy Harrison of Norwell welcomed Ellie, their first child, born on July 17. Her proud grandparents are Marlene Harrison of Ripton, Vt., Howard and Elizabeth Harrison of Florida and Chilmark, and Richard and Sharon Ervin of Massachusetts. Congratulations from us all!

Jim Morgan hosted a birthday party for his wife, Diane, who celebrated a special day on July 25. The party, at the Morgan’s North Road home, also marked the eleventh wedding anniversary of Jim’s sister, Barbara and her husband, John Armstrong, of Menemsha. Cheers from us all!

Bill and Sue Stibel of North Tabor Farm are happy to have their seven-week-old grandson, Bennett Henry Solomon, here from Manhattan with his parents, Julie and Jordan Solomon. By all reports, he is enjoying his first Vineyard visit!

Jules Worthington will be showing his recent works at the Sovereign Bank in Chilmark from August 7 through August 14. The reception will be on August 7 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Seth Wakeman was in town this week for a brief fishing visit with his longtime friend Everett Poole. Seth and Joanne now live in Stonington, Ct. They are looking forward to a fall vacation in Chilmark.

Doug and Carol Whittier of Winthrop, Me., are enjoying a vacation at the Smith cottage on Larsen Lane. Both are retired now and hope to spend more time at the family home here.

The Chilmark historical commission invites you all to the Chilmark Library to hear a talk by Claire Dempsey. The title of her program is Established Error or Novel Fact: Changing Interpretations of Early New England Buildings. She is a preservationist and professor at Boston University. The historical commission is exploring all information available that might make it possible to save the Mayhew Mitchell house in Quansoo. It is Chilmark’s oldest house and is a rare example of early New England housing. The house is currently owned by Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation and they share the commission’s concern for the house. Please come out and hear more about preserving early New England buildings on Wednesday, August 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the library.

Perry and Judy Banker Mehrling of Boulder View are looking forward to a visit this week from their grandson, Sam Banker and his friend Nathan Lobel. Both are entering Arlington High School this fall.

Believe it or not . . . there will be real moon rocks at the Chilmark Library on August 5 at 10:30 a.m. and all of us are invited to drop by and see them. The NASA program, Moon Rocks and Meteors, requires that staff members be trained ahead of time in the handling of the rocks. It is an exciting moment in Chilmark. All ages are welcome.

Alan Dershowitz will lecture at the library on August 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. His subject is Obama and Israel, Friends or Foes? All are welcome. The Friends of the Chilmark Library sponsor the weekly programs.

The Chilmark Community Church will welcome the Reverend Phyllis Evelyn as their guest minister on August 2. She is currently at Andover Newton studying for her doctor of ministry with a special interest in counseling children and young women. She earned her master of divinity at Eden Theological School in Webster Groves, Mo., in 2002. The service begins at 9 a.m.

The Chilmark Community church will continue to sell lobster rolls at the church on Tuesdays in August from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The public is welcome.

I am sorry if you tried to call Susanna Caldwell Linfield and were unable to reach her. Her correct phone number is 305-606-1153.

A memorial service will be held on August 8 at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery for Robert Caldwell with a reception at the family home at Prospect Hill. Bob’s son, Duncan’s phone is 508-645-2009. The children and grandchildren of Robert Caldwell, who died last April, look forward to sharing memories with Bob’s many friends.

Don’t miss the exciting weekend of books and authors coming up on August 1 and 2. There will be a panel discussion and a champagne reception on Saturday night at the Community Center. The panel will discuss the Media Revolution: the Future of Journalism and the Media. The moderator and panel are all people with distinguished careers in journalism and the media. Tickets are available at the center and at Edgartown Books. The book festival will take place outside the Community Center under tents with many well known authors present to discuss their works, sign books and answer questions. The festival has it’s own Web site, mvbookfestival.com, where you can get details and names of all the authors. The festival hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The annual open meeting of the Chilmark town affairs council and the Chilmark board of selectmen is scheduled for August 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Center. This is an opportunity for seasonal residents to ask questions and to learn details of town projects from the town representatives.
