David Stanwood, an Island piano tuner and inventor who lives at Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury, recently attended and lectured at the Annual Institute of the Piano Technicians Guild, held this year in Grand Rapids, Mich. He received the Crowl-Travis Member of Note Award, “In recognition of recent outstanding service and dedication to the Piano Technicians Guild.” He also presented a piano fitted with his latest innovation — the adjustable leverage action, which allows the pianist to change the personality of a piano simply by turning two knobs on either side of the keyboard. The invention is the first of its kind ever seen in the piano world and was received with enthusiastic acclaim.
