Just the day I leave town, the First Family arrives in Aquinnah and especially for a tour at the Lighthouse at Aquinnah Circle. Oh well, another time. At least our treasured Aquinnah police department was able to assist the Secret Service and the First Family. Gay Head lighthousekeeper Joan LeLacheur had the honor of giving them a tour of the lighthouse and the view of our community and the Cliffs from above. It is anticipated that one day they will return to our community and enjoy the sights once again.

On Thursday, August 27 I was sitting atop Abel’s Hill struggling with my new computer and the wireless internet, etc. Garth W. Edwards decided to await the First Family return down South Road and that is when Ollie and I joined him at the foot of Abel’s Hill and had the grand opportunity to wave to the motorcade as they passed by. It was thrilling for each of us and we look forward to the return of President Obama and his First Family to our up-Island shores.

Equally as exciting on Thursday was the opportunity to attend the book signing of Tom Shachtman with his Airlift to America at Midnight Farm. The foreward of his book was written by Harry Belafonte, who was present at the signing, as he assisted with the travel and support of the students as well. Cora Weiss and her husband, Peter, were very instrumental in assisting with the airlifts from 1959 to 1963 when 800 East African students were given the opportunity to study in the United States. Mrs. Weiss kept in touch with each and every one of the 800 students during their stay in America. One of those students was Barack Obama, the father of our President. Mrs. Weiss expressed that “just about everything good that goes on in the world has a Vineyard connection.” It was a pleasure to meet Mr. Shachtman and to not only meet but also have a photograph with Harry Belafonte.

Noah James Manning and his mother, Theresa, returned home on Saturday afternoon after spending a few days in Poughkeepsie with his grandparents Bill and Joan Kistner — Joan having recently returned to her home following months of illness and hospital stays. Noah was disappointed that he missed the First Family’s visit to Aquinnah.

Juleann VanBelle, the Aquinnah town nurse, will have her clinic on Monday, Sept. 14 due to the Labor Day holiday. If you would like to visit with her, she will be at the Aquinnah town hall from 1 to 3 p.m. that day.

Condolences to the family and friends of Elizabeth Richards DeCosta. Liz was a schoolmate at MVRHS and a former coworker at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Services will be held near her home in Virginia.

The discussion at the Howes House on Sept. 1 by Dr. Jordan Cohen on health care reform was quite informative. As president emeritus of the Association of American Medical Colleges, perhaps he should be representing us at a national level as well.

On Sept. 8, the Rev. William Cline will be the guest speaker at the Howes House discussion group at 9:30 a.m. His topic will be the changes in chaplain work over the years, as he has been a military chaplain for 30 years. Reverend Cline is often a guest minister at Community Baptist Church.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will be hosting their annual Pow Wow at Aquinnah Circle on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13. Grand entry will be at noon on Saturday. Enjoy the Native dancers and singers and drums. Vendors will be available with Native American arts, jewelry, food and more. Raffles will be held throughout the day. The VTA bus will drop you off right at the entrance to the Pow Wow. Parking is also available at the tribal building or the town parking lot. This will be a fun day for the entire family. Please join our tribal members for the cultural events of the weekend. For further information, please call 508-645-9265.
