Walter and Gail Burke hosted a huge family reunion at their home last week. Present to enjoy the September weather were Walter’s sister, Margaret, and her husband, Dick King of Plymouth. Fred and Jennifer Adams, daughter and son in law to the Burkes, came from West Springfield and brought the delightful Abigail, a tall and beautiful three-and-a-half-year-old.

Her cousin, two-and-a half-year-old Ernesto, was accompanied by his parents, Alvaro and Megan Berroteran-Burke. Cathy came from Belchertown, and forgive me, Cathy, for not noting your last name. The whole group took walks to the beach and bonded over food and fun. An interesting note about Dick King: he’s the man who brought UPS to the Island back in the 1960s. He was staying at the Mansion House, looked out the window and saw the Brickman’s sign. He walked in and asked if they would be interested in next day delivery. What a great contact! Brickman’s was thrilled and Dick went on to sign up many other Island businesses so that now all the Island dogs are barking at the brown trucks and threatening the men in brown. But we get our packages quickly!

Jim and Trude Hart had their son Ron and daughter in law Diane visiting them last week from Spotswood, N.J. The couple enjoyed great weather. It was bittersweet because Trude and Jim left yesterday for their winter travels. And hats off to Jim Hart for working so hard on Lenny’s Loop road improvements. Jim is definitely the mayor of the neighborhood.

Tomorrow is another grand electronics disposal day on the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services campus. Cell phones, microwaves, air conditioners, televisions, there’s nothing they can’t handle. I’ll see you there.

New members are always welcome. You don’t need to be Scottish, just have a love of the people and their culture. If a Gardella can join, so can you.

Tom Dresser’s book, It Was Forty Years Ago Today, has been published. It contains a compendium of Beatles’ albums, background into their songs, comments from fans, and coming of age memories of the 1960s. Tom is so energetic, how does he get it all done? Congratulations. The book is available through Amazon.com and PublishAmerica.com.

It’s not too late to sign up for the Boys’ and Girls’ Club charity bike ride on Saturday, Oct. 17, called Cycle Martha’s Vineyard. This is another Rotary event; all are welcome. Contact Margo Urbany-Joyce at 508-627-7777 for information or visit cyclemarthasvineyard@gmail.com.

Tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Vineyard Assembly of God Church, across from the Scottish Bake House, we will say goodbye to and celebrate the life of Mamise Schwarz. The family invites all who knew and loved her. That’s going to be one over-packed church.

Get well wishes go to the interim pastor of Vineyard Assembly of God, Robert Hallquist, who is getting medical attention in Boston.
