Congratulations to Rear Admiral Ron J. MacLaren, who was promoted to that position on Oct. 3 at a ceremony in Bessemer, Ala. Ron has been a member of the United States Naval Reserves for 30 years, most recently serving as captain. In 2007 he served in Kuwait for eight months, overseeing more than 600 troops. His career has taken him from Panama to Alabama, Hawaii and every stop in between. Ron and his wife, Terri, reside on the Island where he is the director for the health department of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).

Autumn is really upon us. The temperatures have started to head toward freezing, the mums are beginning to wilt, winter projects are being planned, the deer are strolling along the byways during the day and crunching on acorns throughout the day, the derby is coming to a close, the Aquinnah Restaurant, the Outermost Inn, and the Dreamcatcher closed over the weekend.

Looking for a really special treat this time of year? On Friday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. at Nectar’s, you will hear local entertainment with Phil daRosa’s Band, Erich Luening, Isaac Taylor and Colin Ruel. Tickets are only $10.

Max and Cheryl Batzer were at their Lobsterville home for the weekend. It was great to see them while they were here to oversee all the renovations going on at their beautiful cottage.

Chantal Booker enjoyed the weekend in Rhode Island as the guest of Missy, Zachary and Faith Smalley.

Al and Anna Lana were at their family home at Lobsterville over the weekend. While here, they caught up with his sister Sue Lana Shea, and niece Debbie Viglas. They also enjoyed the antique show at the Grange and other great events over the holiday weekend.

Doug Plumerand his beautiful bride, Kathleen, were at their Aquinnah home over the holiday weekend, enjoying sites around the up-Island area.

Sincerest condolences to the family and multitude of friends of Lucy (Bideau) Hart Abbot, who died at her home in Oak Bluffs. Bideau was a former coworker of several years with us when we all worked at the Ocean View in the 1970s. She would often entertain the staff and musicians at her Harthaven home after hours. A truly sensible and sensitive woman who will be missed by many.

Condolences to the family and friends of Mildred Flanders, who passed away at Windemere. She was always a familiar sight around Menemsha alongside her late husband, Robert.

Condolences to the family and friends of Irene Valenti, who passed away at Windemere. Irene was a former coworker at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where we shared many fond memories over the years of knowing each other.

Condolences to the family and friends of Billie Weaver, who arrived on the Vineyard in the 1960s as a plumber working for Colin Beaton. He worked his way up the ladder, purchased real estate in Aquinnah and built the four beach houses at the other end of Lighthouse Road. He raised the younger ones of his nine children and their families on the Vineyard. It was two years ago this week that he returned to his winter home in Florida, where he had remained.
