Chris Velan is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, lawyer and producer of the soundtrack to the documentary film, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, called Living Like a Refugee. He’s also an environmentally concerned musician, and he’s making a stop on his North American tour to play at Nectar’s nightclub at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport for a concert to benefit Plum Hill School’s effort to build a permanent and eco-green home for the school here on the Island.

The concert will be next Saturday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The New York Times reports that Canadian Mr. Velan gives club proprietors a questionnaire on behalf of Reverb, a nonprofit group that helps musicians travel green. It asks about recycling and heating systems, and most clubs, Mr. Velan said, have been “taken off guard” by the questions.

“This hasn’t been high on the priority list for a majority of clubs,” he told the newspaper.

Plum Hill School and the Island Waldorf community are launching a capital campaign to build a a permanent, green building for a new and expanded Waldorf Early Childhood Center on Martha’s Vineyard. Plum Hill is currently crowded in rented space in West Tisbury, and this year the school began a small home satellite program supporting the overow of interest in Waldorf early childhood education.

Mr. Velan performs as a one-man band, using a loop pedal (he plays in his socks to better navigate the small pedals). His influences range from folk to blues to reggae, African and country; he’s been compared most often to beach music boy Jack Johnson. Mr. Velan is touring in support of his third album, Solidago.
