Chilmark enjoyed another week of Indian summer with mild temperatures and sunshine. The crisper November days must be just ahead. The woods are still yellow and leafy and a pleasure to drive by.
Operation Flu Shot surely involved the population of the entire Island; however, I’m not sure everyone was able to get a shot. It was quite a people-moving event, with nurses giving our shots to us in our cars ... the ultimate in the drive-through concept. Thanks to all the volunteers who worked hard to make it happen.
As is sometimes the case, this week’s announcements outnumber the social news but I will try to make them readable.

Let Vineyarders Decide is the name of a grassroots group who have organized themselves to try and let those who are planning the windmill-power energy source in up-Island waters what Vineyarders think about it all. They need as many members as they can get to sway the Boston power center. The public comment part of this project closes on Nov. 23. Vineyard Power, a community owned electric power cooperative, will present a program and invite discussion at the Chilmark Library on Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. They offer alternative ideas to the two other windmill proposals being circulated presently. Come and learn some new ideas on the subject.
The Chilmark church invites us all to the weekly soup suppers on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. The Rev. Woody Bowman will preach at the Chilmark Community Church on Nov. 15 at the 9 a.m. service.
The Chilmark Fire Fighters want to remind us that this is the time of year to check up on your chimney. It may need to be cleaned before you light up the Yule logs or welcome Santa down the chimney. Wednesday, Nov. 18, is the last session of the Autumn in New England after-school crafts program. It is from 3 to 4 p.m. for first through fifth graders. Librarian Irene Tewksbury puts it all together.
Bill and Emily Meegan of Middle Road are enjoying a week of work and play in Belize.
Coco Adams is planning a holiday flea market to be held at the Community Center on Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be food available to buy. Anyone wishing to sell things is welcome to call Coco at 508-645-3414 and book a table. Mark your calendars, this is a great way to start your in-town holiday shopping. In the days to come I will tell you what Chilmark businesses are open for this season.
Allen Keith is back at his South Road home after enjoying an extended birding trip to the far Pacific. He visited, among other places, New Zealand and Tasmania. We hope to get more details from him after he makes what we hope will be a speedy recovery from a nasty cold caught, of course, on the long flight home.
