The library parties, for kids and grownups, were simply fantastic last Wednesday night. Wednesday was also a very special day for the Rotarians who hold their lunch meeting weekly. The speaker was Warren Pettit, who presented a most interesting talk on his photography done by remote control helicopter. This is not an inexpensive hobby, but a very rewarding one. Now there’s a unique gift for one of your loved ones for Christmas!

Vineyard Haven artist Cindy Kane will open her studio at 31 Sylvan avenue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. Call 508-696-6533 if you’d like more information or directions.

Artists do abound here. My favorite photographer, John Wightman, is presenting his Island Images show, with some new twists, at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard, Chilmark, throughout the holidays. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last year I picked up one of my favorites, Lambscape. I gave it as a gift, but we have a copy in our high school library so I’m still able to enjoy it weekly.

Another place to pick up last-minute gifts is our library, with two mini-book sales this weekend. Saturday, Dec. 19, and Sunday, Dec. 20, the sales will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Remember, in the winter months our intrepid librarians keep the doors open on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Library reusable tote bags also make terrific gifts and wrappings. Tuesday, Dec. 22 features holiday themed storytime, 10 a.m. for infants to two-year-olds. At 11 a.m. the three-to-five set takes over. As you know, school is half day on Wednesday, so the library will show a free movie with popcorn for ages four and up, something about a chocolate wonderland, at 1 p.m.

Robin Sylvia is continuing her fabulous homemade fudge, and she will deliver! I think fudge is always a welcome holiday gift. Call 508-693-5366 to hear your choices and place your order or check her out online at robinshomemadefudge.com. The mint chocolate swirl looks especially Christmasy.

It’s not too soon to think about the annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday brunch and renewal of your membership in the NAACP of MV. Response is requested by Jan. 4. This year the brunch will be at Deon’s on Circuit avenue from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The $55 per person ticket includes your annual membership and a subscription to the magazine, Crisis. Send your check and confirm the number in your party to P.O. Box 1513, Oak Bluffs. I’ll see you there.

Get well wishes go out to one of our favorite seasonal residents, Leda Giatti, who is recovering from surgery in New York.

Anniversary bouquets go out to Dick and Lorraine Clark today.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Jamie Warrington and Injy Farat Lew today. Tomorrow is claimed by Ron Jackson. Dec. 20 honors Carissa Noel Doup. Dec. 21 belongs to Cathy Weiss. Dec. 22 is a party for Sally Benson, Stephen Dunham Sr., John Giles and Monica Radoszlewski. And on Dec. 24 Stephen Perry, Emily Chappell and Leo Kelley take the cake. Many happy returns.

And on Christmas morning, in your homes, in your hearts and under your trees, may you all find peace.
