Ring In New Year In Ring of Fire

The three words sound scary: ring of fire. In the Pacific Ocean, it’s where a lot of earthquakes and volcanoes go off. To Johnny Cash it was where you fell in love. But to disc golfers, it’s where you triumph over all those who lack your finesse with a frisbee — on three, two, one — as everyone throws simultaneously into the chain-link cage called a hole in disc golf.

What better way to begin the new year than in a ring of fire, fireside, with friends at Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs. New Year’s Day is the pub’s second annual Disc Golf Tournament. Festivities begin with breakfast and beverages at 10 a.m. at the brewery on Kennebec avenue, with an indoor ring of fire competition. Then it’s off to the state forest course, whatever the weather (Island diehards were frolfing in the snowdrifts before they melted last week).

For $25 you get it all, awards and food — and proceeds go to the maintenance of the disc course.
