Legendary film critic Pauline Kael wrote of The Black Stallion, “It may be the greatest children’s movie ever made” — and so it may be the greatest film ever selected to kick off a new Friday family movie series at the Chilmark Public Library, tonight at 7 p.m.
The library’s plan is family entertainment for almost all ages: movies rated G, PG and PG-13 on Friday nights along with popcorn and juice. Admission, popcorn and juice are free. The series will continue for eight weeks in January and February.
Tonight’s feature is The Black Stallion, made in 1979 and already considered a classic. Roger Ebert called it a wonderful experience for adults and for kids. It was adapted from the beloved 1941 novel by Walter Farley.
A shipwreck leaves young Alec stranded on a deserted island with a wild stallion. Dependent on each other for survival, boy and horse learn to trust and love each other. After their rescue, under a passionate trainer played by Oscar-nominated Mickey Rooney, with Alec as jockey, the stallion hits the racetrack.
Future features will be Jan. 15, Captains Courageous; Jan. 22, Big; Jan. 29, Freedom Writers; Feb. 5, Whale Rider; Feb. 12, Sabrina; Feb. 19, Bee Movie; and Feb. 26, 2001: A Space Odyssey (or E.T.)
