Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal council chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais and tribal historic preservation officer Bettina Malonson Washington attended the hearing in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday regarding Nantucket Sound. Notification was received from the National Park Service under the auspices of the United States Department of the Interior that Nantucket Sound is eligible as a designated property of historic significance as deemed by the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places and was also deemed eligible by our State Historic Preservation Officer. Cheryl and Bettina were invited to the hearing by Secretary Kenneth Salazar, which is the first time an invitation has been offered directly from the secretary to attend a meeting in Washington. While there, they have also been invited to meet with Larry Echohawk, director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The Aquinnah polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 for your voting pleasure. If you are not going to be in town that day during those hours, you may stop by and vote absentee beforehand with Carolyn Feltz, our Aquinnah town clerk. Reminder: democracy is not a spectator sport. This is our opportunity to protect our rights as citizens and to have a responsible and sensitive United States senator who will fill the shoes of our late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who served us well over the decades. See you at the polls.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Family History Center at Merchant Mart on State Road in Tisbury across from the Black Dog Cafe. Members are encouraged to bring their genealogy software and samples of their printed reports with them and to provide a synopsis of why they prefer that particular software, how user friendly it is or is not, and would they recommend it to others. Members are also encouraged to bring their ancestry chart and with a working session to assist each other, we will see what we can discover together. New members are welcome, beginner genealogists to professional and all those in between are encouraged to attend. Annual dues are $25.

Super Bowl Sunday will be celebrated at the Aquinnah town hall on Sunday, Feb. 7, from 3 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $55 which will benefit a donation for Angel Flight of New England which has served many members of our community. Sunday brunch at the Aquinnah town hall on Jan. 10 was a great success. Thank you to chefs Jeffrey Burgoyne, Mike Hebert, Betty Joslow and Gary Haley for their culinary delights. We will look forward to our next community brunch in February.

Get well wishes to Nancy Benoit, who is recuperating from her surgery at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on New Year’s Day. She is up and about after having had wonderful care, not only in the hospital but when she returned home as well. To top it all off, her first day out driving following surgery she met up with a deer in the usual manner.

Clare M. Sheridan was in Aquinnah over the weekend. We shared a delicious dinner on Saturday evening. Clare is the head librarian at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell. She is the keeper of beautiful works of art, sharing their history with the public. Lowell is one of the original textile communities, settled in the colony’s early days. If you are in Lowell, please stop by the museum, which is at 491 Dutton Street.

Arnold and Norma Zack were at their Aquinnah home over the weekend. They are overseeing the addition of a new home on their property for their growing family.

Condolences to the family and friends of Betty (Sylvia) Norton. Her memorial service will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Betty was always so helpful with our Oak Bluffs Firemen’s Association spousal duties. We shared many duties and laughter with our dinners, auctions, firemen’s balls, and she was always available and willing to assist.

Condolences to the family of Jean (Correllus) Ward who passed away over the weekend. It was always a pleasure to see Jean in her many capacities.

Memorial services for Corrine (Averill) Hatt will be held this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road. Fellow members of our Class of 1964 at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School will have their chance to wear one of Corrine’s many hats during her memorial. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown.

Let us all be mindful of those affected by the earthquake in Haiti on Tuesday. If we take just a moment and send a small amount to Oxfam or to the Red Cross, our efforts will assist so many in their time of need.

Belated happy birthday wishes this week to Ann Burt, who celebrated on Jan. 9; Gloria Fisk on Jan. 11; Gordon Perry on Jan. 12, who shared the day with Pam Glavin, Priscilla Belain and Caleb Hallett. Genevieve Rogers observed her 94th birthday on Jan. 13 and shared the day with Edie Baker, who was at her desk at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital switchboard as always. Now that I have found my birthday book once again, it will not stretch what memory I have left.
