Community Baptist Church of Gay Head held their annual meeting on Sunday at the home of Rev. Roger Spinney and his wife, Sharon. Following our delicious luncheon, the business meeting convened. We were informed that Mrs. Kathryn B. Stewart had retired after being our organist for the past two decades. Kathryn has actually taught music to our community as our music teacher who would arrive every Wednesday for classes at our one-room schoolhouse from 1955 through 1968.

We next learned that due to the economy, low attendance at services due to our aging congregation, high heating costs, the need for shingling, painting, insulation and other repairs, that we would perhaps close our church for the winter. We did not want that to happen as our ministry is the oldest Native American Baptist Church in continuous ministry in the United States, having been formed in 1693 and where our services were once performed in our native language. In the meantime, we are sending an appeal to those who would care to send a $5 donation to: Community Baptist Church of Gay Head, Box 151, Aquinnah, MA 02535. Our next church membership meeting will be a potluck luncheon held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at the Totem Pole Inn. Thank you one and all.

Super Bowl Sunday will be celebrated at the Aquinnah town hall on Feb. 7 from 3 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $55 and must be purchased by Feb. 1; proceeds will be donated to Angel Flight. Enjoy the day with your family and friends before the 9-by-12-footwide screen projector, enjoying the game. You will dine on all the pasta and meatballs you would like, sausage and peppers, salad, desserts and beverages. For further information, please call Jeff at 774-521-6891.

The Aquinnah community programs committee will sponsor a flea market on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the town hall. There will be great collections of articles for sale as everyone is in the mood for cleaning out their attics and basements while being home for the winter. Breakfast treats will be available, with snails and sticky buns from Juli Vanderhoop’s Orange Peel Bakery. Artwork, antiques, books, Valentine’s Day jewelry by Laurie Bradway, Valentine dog cards by Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop, wampum jewelry, specialty knit scarves, pottery, clothing, shoes and much more. Lunch will be available as well as other tasty treats throughout the day. To reserve table space, please call Betty at 508-645-3340.

Feb. 21 will be the next Aquinnah breakfast at the town hall and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $5 for all you can eat. Children under five years of age may dine for free. Thank you to Kathryn Corjulo and her daughter Clara for their very generous donation of maple syrup, which will last us for many breakfasts.

Pam Glavin and Carl Widdiss returned home a week ago after spending time in Providence, R.I., where they celebrated Pam’s major milestone birthday. They enjoyed a wonder dinner at an Italian restaurant on Federal Hill, ice skating and shopping. For now, Pam is back making her famous Pam’s Pesto.

Condolences to the family of Mary Larsen who passed away in Florida on Sunday. Beloved wife of Louis Larsen Sr. for more than six decades. A family friend of generations and fellow family of fishermen.

Welcome to Paul and Louise Petersiel of Swampscott, who will be neighbors for the next few years. They have been spending the winter renovating the century-old stone house of the Hubert family directly across the road from our home. Paul and Louise own the Red Rock restaurant in Swampscott, Lime Ricky’s in Marblehead, and will be managing the Chilmark Tavern for the next few summer seasons. We look forward to their arrival in the springtime. They are on the Vineyard this week as the guests of Frank and Judy Lorusso at their Chilmark home.

Happy 70th anniversary wishes to Ozzie and Rena Fischer as they celebrate their special day on Jan. 25. They met at a dance at the Chilmark Tavern and Rena was a little shy about Ozzie’s request for a dance as she really did not know him, and as they say, “the rest is history.”
