It is clearly evident that the winter blahs have set in. The weekend weather was reasonable, with two inches of rain Sunday night that washed away the snow except for the large piles. However on the brighter side, we are less than two short months away from the start of daylight saving time and spring. Seed catalogs have started to arrive in the daily mail and we can study them in front of the fireplace and dream. David and Eleanor Stanwood, of Lambert’s Cove, report that they have been growing organic meat for their neighbors and they all love it. Her endeavor has been to raise locally grown lamb for anyone who wants to buy it; community supported meat production on the small scale of agriculture.

The special U.S. Senate election is now history. In our town, 61 per cent or 1,392 people turned out to vote on a day that featured rain and chilly temperatures. Although Martha Coakley easily won in this town, our congratulations to the winner, Scott Brown.

Rich and Kaysea Hart of this town and Boston announce the birth of a daughter, Dylan Isabella, born on Jan. 5. Congratulations!

It is now official: police chief Beth Toomey has resigned her position, effective at the end of March. She plans to be active in the search for a new chief.

Elton Nascimento and his wife, Sarah Monast, of Old Courthouse Road, returned home Monday night after spending the long weekend in New York city. Elton reports enjoying the sights and sounds, but he was happy to get back home.

Nettie Kent reports that Spencer Binney, an audio engineer with DAS studios who has recorded several Vineyard artists here and in Los Angeles, is now in Roaring River, Jamaica. He is working with Taggart Young, of Edgartown Road, to build four bungalows including a recording studio in a retreat known as the Hill that is located high above sugar cane fields with a clear view of the Caribbean.

Meg Higgins, over at the church, reports that there will be a benefit for Dede Hagen tomorrow night at 6 p.m. There will be dinner, dancing, live music featuring Joanne Cassidy, and the Sultans of Swing, and a silent auction at the Mediterranean Restaurant in Oak Bluffs. Tickets are available in the church office, the Mediterranean restaurant, charter school and several other locations. Also the church’s annual meeting will be held on Sunday after services, with a chowder luncheon to follow.

The Adult and Community Education Program (ACE MV) is offering two courses for graduate and undergraduate credit from Northeastern University starting tomorrow. These courses will take place over six Saturday sessions and are designed to help working Vineyarders enjoy higher learning at an affordable price without the expense of traveling. The two Northeastern courses are taught by longtime Island educators. Irish History will be taught by Elaine Cawley Weintraub; Teaching Language and Literature through the Arts and Media will be taught by Lynn Ditchfield, examining current theories and creative approaches for language acquisition using the arts and media and inquiry-based learning.

The winter catalog and flyers of courses are available online and at Island schools and libraries, courtesy of a grant from the Permanent Endowment Fund and support from the Vineyard public schools. The catalog of courses, registration forms, gift certificates, applications for the International Service program, and detailed information are also available online at acemv.org. For more information, e-mail Lynn at lynn@acemv.org or leave a voice mail message at 508-693-1033, extension 240.

Tomorrow, Ten Thousand Means and the Mansion House present an all-day, townwide event dubbed Jour du Soleil...Vineyard Haven Gives to Haiti, a collective benefit for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Throughout the day, there will be a silent auction, held at the Mansion House, filled with items donated by many Vineyard businesses. Posters will be on the front doors of all your favorite stores indicating their donation. EduComp and Midnight Farm will donate 10 per cent of their sales for the day, in addition to an iPod from EduComp and a chandelier for auction by Midnight Farm,

Zephrus will provide a special Vineyard Haven Gives to Haiti lunch special as well as soup-to-go in packaging donated by EcoMV, with the proceeds going directly to Doctors Without Borders. Our Island Club will donate a membership for auction. Chris Bahara is founder of the human rights nonprofit Ten Thousand Means and is coordinating this benefit in conjunction with the Doctors Without Borders. He reports that we can do this community to community, neighbor to neighbor. It is last-minute, but the time is now, and tomorrow, we’ll make Martha’s Vineyard the place.

Karen Flynn, of Indian Hill Road, called to inform me of an Islandwide ecumenical church service. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. The purpose of the service was to offer prayers for the people of Haiti.

“On January 15, 1946 Mike and Elizabeth Athearn and their young son George moved from the farm house of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Athearn of Crow Hollow. They had been living there since his discharge from the U.S. Army last year. Their new home is the upstairs apartment in the home of Emma Terry, on State Road. The house is located between S.M. Mayhew’s store and the First Congregational Church. For many years the house was owned by Ulysses Mayhew, a state representative and partner in the store business with his brother Sanderson.”
