I heard the expression “Welcome to New England” after almost every forecast this week because it was beautiful today, and tomorrow will snow, then freezing cold. I know we complain about it a lot, but we always find ourselves back here in New England.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. I did not get the list of school children’s birthdays this month, so I apologize and send special wishes to all of them.

Special anniversary wishes go out to Jan and Floyd Norton, who celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Jan. 27. Congratulations to both, and here is to many more years together.

On Friday, Feb. 5, members of the eighth grade class will be holding their fourth annual silent and live auction at the Harbor View Hotel. The time is 6:30 to 9 p.m. and all the proceeds will go to their Washington, D.C., trip in the spring.

We all have been following the news about Haiti the past few weeks, so I think it is nice to know that we have two Island ladies who are there now, volunteering their time to the cause.

Deanna Ahearn Laird is with members of the CRUDEM (Center for the Rural Development of Milot) team who are running the Sacred Heart Hospital (HôpitalSacré Coeur) in Milot, Haiti. This hospital quickly became overrun with earthquake victims; they now have erected a full field hospital and need emergency, pediatric emergency and trauma personnel. That has been Dee’s specialty for the past 15 years, so she has been asked to go down. It will be her third disaster deployment and second time to Haiti. She left last Saturday and, all going well, she will be returning to the Vineyard tomorrow, Jan. 30. Keep Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.

Also in Haiti is Deb O’Hara-Rusckowski, who is well known around the Island churches for all of her time and effort, a nurse for the CRUDEM Foundation.

Thank you to both ladies for volunteering their time and taking time from their families.

Anastasia Oliveira and Jonas Cavallo welcomed their son, Troy Cassius Cavallo into their lives on Dec. 30. Troy is the first grandchild for Patricia Correiro, Michael and Courtney Oliveira, and Coo and Donna Cavallo, who are spending as much time as possible taking care of baby Troy, Ana and Jonas. Troy’s great-grandparents are Wilma and Whitey Miller and Fred and Margaret Bopp, and he has a very special great-aunt, Helena Arruda.

There will be a Valentine tea on Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Federated Church Parish Hall at 45 South Summer street in Edgartown. All Island church women are invited the program, which includes Phil Dietterich on piano, Jan Hyer on cello and Matt Pelikan on recorder. It’s all free.

I have not been able to write this column for the past few weeks due to personal reasons. I could not go without saying thank you to my family for their support, as they are most important in one’s life. The second is the treasure of friendship people have, and I must say I have an ocean full of treasured friends. I am thankful to every one of them for the phone calls, the meals and cards and of course their love and support. I could not be any more blessed.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
