Adopt a Drain

Edgartown School sixth grade teacher Gale Meister and her former student teacher Kathy Smith received the 2009 New England Water Environment Association’s public educator award, recognizing those who promote cleaner water, increase public awareness and take action on water pollution control.

The winning project, Adopt a Drain Campaign, taught sixth graders about local pollution and water quality in the town’s harbor. The students installed medallions next to street drains in town advising citizens to be conscientious of what goes into the storm drains, which eventually ends up in our harbor.

The project was done in partnership with Edgartown water treatment plant manager Joe Alosso.

The award was presented on Jan. 27 in Boston.
