The Falmouth Academy this week announced the Vineyard winners at the academy’s science fair.

Seventh grader Eli Hanschka, son of Nancy Tutko and Whit Hanschka of Vineyard Haven, won fourth place in the middle school (grades 7 and 8) for his research into the effect of water pH on the germination of bean seeds.

Sophomore Signe Baumhofer, the daughter of Kim and Mark Baumhofer of Vineyard Haven, earned honorable mention in the upper school for her research and defense of her project titled, “Does your healthy lawn include clover?”

For three hours on the afternoon of Feb. 18, academy students in grades 7 through 11 presented and defended their hands-on research at the 22nd all-school science fair. More than 100 judges from the scientific, medical and engineering communities volunteered to question students and evaluate their presentations.
