The weather has been a welcome relief for the past week with most days in the 50s and spring just around the corner. Tomorrow night is time to turn your clocks ahead one hour as we enter daylight saving time.

Condolences to the family and friends of Thomas P. Benton, whose family resided on the town line of Aquinnah and Chilmark. I have fond memories from more than half a century ago while spending time on the beach below their home overlooking the Herring Creek.

Condolences to the family of Henry Corey, cofounder of the Dukes County Savings Bank in 1955, of which my grandfather, Captain Walter Manning, was one of the original corporators and thus a longtime family friend.

Condolences to the family and friends of Terese Lyons Lane, a seasonal resident of Aquinnah since the mid 1960s, who passed away on Sunday, March 7 in Hanover, N.H. Terese was 88 years old, the widow of Alvin S. Lane who passed away in 2007. When not traveling the world, the Lanes divided their time between their homes in Riverdale, N.Y. and the Vineyard. Terese enjoyed the time she had spent during the summer of 2009 with her daughter Judith at their Aquinnah home and visiting with her many friends and neighbors and renewing friendships. She looked forward to returning this year and we anticipated her return. A celebration of her life is being planned for summer. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Jo and her husband, Robert Harris, and Judith Lane and her husband, Mark Mattson, and her two grandsons, Ian and Roger Mattson.

Condolences to Charity Randolph and her family in the death of her husband, James Brown, who passed away in Chicago on Sunday, March 7. Jim and Charity enjoyed their extended visits to their Vineyard home.

Welcome to Mark Owen Shea, who was born on Jan. 20 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Mark is the son of Dr. Ryan Shea and his wife Rachel (Cottle) Shea. He is the first grandchild of Mark and Susan (Lana) Shea of Edgartown and Aquinnah, and the grandson of Edmund Cottle, Jr. and Deborah (Pelow). Mark is the great-grandson of Edmund Cottle Sr. and Betty (Gale) of Lambert’s Cove, and the late Albert and Jennie Lana of Aquinnah.
