The Edgartown selectmen voted against an Edgartown Wastewater Commission plan to pursue a feasibility study for building a wind turbine at its treatment facility, saying that the project proved too expensive and problematic.

The board denied the commission’s written request to contact town counsel about the feasibility study, and said they believe they should turn their attention away from wind energy at the site.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with the concept of wind, particularly at that location,” said selectman Arthur Smadbeck.

No money has been spent on the turbine project, and the selectmen agreed that it should stay that way. “We’ve looked heavily at wind, and there are going to become so many issues that it will be a waste of taxpayer money to go further with this,” said Mr. Smadbeck.

Instead, the board suggested looking into other alternative energy sources at the site. Mr. Smadbeck recommended installing grant-funded solar panels at the wastewater facility.

In other business, the Edgartown Public Library trustees and the selectmen proposed seven members for a building design committee for the ongoing library expansion project.

Laurence Mercier, Chris Scott, Mort Fearey, Anne Tyra, Dick Knight, Bob Andrews and Michael Donaroma are expected to be appointed to the new committee by the end of this month. Its first meeting will be held sometime in early April.

The $15 million project to expand the library, located in the Carnegie building on North Water street, was scrapped last month when trustees discovered that they would need to ask for the town to approve more than $5 million in spending in order to qualify for state grant funding. Instead, they opted to go back to the drawing board with the plan, and hope to qualify for future grant funding. The building design committee will begin to develop a new plan for the project.
