He was more that indicted by a grand jury. He was sentenced and served prison time. I believe it was 4 years. And then he was elected to a public office?????

This is just plain sad, I feel for his faimly,friends and all people involved. Mr Duarte is in need of help that maybe he should have gotten the first time, I hope he gets it. I hope his faimly gets some help too so they can be at peace.

Let's hope that the court system does its job so that the good people of Tisbury can focus on how someone like this can be an elected member of the Planning Board. If they were aware of this, all should do the right thing and resign their posts as should anyone involved in running the town. This is shameful.

He was elected to the Planning Board as a write in candidate when nobody else ran for the office. I think he got something like 12 write in votes.

Ken, All the duly elected officials that knew that he was serving on the Planning Board (and a convicted felon) should resign their board positions to leave Duart to be the sole planning board member? WHAT ARE YOU ON? Shameful? everyone else that was duly elected should do what the citizen's expect? That is to uphold the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Your comment makes zero sense. You mean there were people on this island that didn't know his checkered and perverted past? And Mr. Gault, comparing and writing about trees that were illegally planted years ago in the same paragraph with a rape and assault of a special needs individual makes your point (whatever it be you are trying to make) distasteful and disgraceful. While others were working on Planning Board issues, town issues and while I was raking my leaves, these actions, in your head, allowed Duart to be involved in criminal activity? What? It's called accountability. I don't see anyone, except Duart himself, responsible for these abhorrent and criminal acts. Nobody purchased the ferry ticket for him to run from the island, we just paid for his trip back. May he get a swift and just trial.

Wow am I in the third grade again? Thought I grew up but by the sounds of some of this feedback a lot of you haven't...Name calling get real you can tell its the Island everyone has something to say weather they know you or not..As you guys and I'm guessing you are adults are throwing out names try to remember how small the Island really is and understand if you can get your sorry little heads around it but Peter has a large family and so the ones that are reading these nasty little comments that every one is throwing out are both young and old and very heartbroken about this whole thing..If any of you have feelings you would keep them to your self..Yes everyone is in titled to their thoughts and feelings and able to write their own comments but you have no IDEA..This is not just about him this is about an Island family who needs time to think about what has happened and try to figure out what has just happened.Time to feel and process everything. If it was some one in your family how would you feel. He needed help and no one gave it to him. But the funny thing is every day in the real world this is happening sex offenders doing it again or getting jobs working with kids or what ever the case maybe..EVERY DAY this crap happens but because its the vineyard OMG right this is a first...Sorry but its not. Who are you talking about? Are you talking about the poor person that he allegedly raped? Or are you just thinking about the family that had ample opportunity, ample time and ample resources to get poor Petey help? Give me a break. I feel for the victim, not the level II sex offender. We know what this is about, don't make us sound like we are ignorant, point it we don't care about the Level II sex offender but we do care about the people he victimized. Yes, this happens all over the U.S. on a daily basis and those people in those communities are dealing with the same emotions that we are. We feel for the victims and blame the sex offender. I don't think anyone here is blaming the family but don't make it our responsibility to get him help and certainly don't criticize us for being outraged. He will never get the help he needs. He has lost ALL trust years ago and he just reinforced why we don't trust people like that back in our community. We have a right to be outraged!

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" The "family" of Peter Duart did try everything in their power to get him help. All the resources in the world can't help someone if they aren't willing to accept it. Peter's actiona are inexcusable, absolutely with out a doubt, however you may want to look harder into your justice system. The same system who throws people into prison and then releases them the exact same way into society. This is not the fault of the family. Judge not, lest thee be judged.
