What a week we have had: weather in the 50s and people walking on the bike paths in shorts and T-shirts. People worked in their gardens, then Mother Nature watered them all for us. The ponds are quite full, and the waterfowl are really enjoying it.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Jermaine Mendez, who celebrated March 22; Angel Shepard, March 23; Colleen Carroll, March 24; Charlotte Hammond, March 25; and to Amelia Durawa and Maria Menezes, who celebrate their day today, March 26.
On Wednesday, April 7, the public is invited to an Edgartown candidates’ forum at 7 p.m. at the Whaling Church in the Baylies Room, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. The forum will offer an opportunity to hear statements from those running for office and to ask questions. Be sure to attend and bring your friends.
On Thursday, April 8, there will be a play reading at the Federated Church Hall in Edgartown. Hors d’oeuvre and wine will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by The Pony Express, a play to tickle your funny bone. A donation of $5 would be appreciated to cover costs.
The Harbor View on a very stormy Saturday was the setting for a bridal shower for Melanie Rankow, who will marry fiancé Nicholas Prescott in June. But the weather did not dampen the fun atmosphere of the shower, which was attended by many friends and relatives. Maid of honor Angela Rankow Welch and bridesmaids Jennifer Rankow and Ashley Prescott did a fabulous job with the table setting and favors of spider plants in nautical clay pots and the selection of a delicious brunch. It was a great day and we wish them all the best.
While Melanie was opening her gifts, many of us old married ladies decided that we should have showers every 10 to 15 years to renew our original wedding presents. Maybe we could start a trend.
I went to lunch with my friend Donna last week at the Wharf. The food was great as usual, but the company was even greater, as Donna’s daughter in law to be and her grandson Troy joined us for lunch. Troy had the best time smiling at all us girls and entertaining us.
We also enjoyed the new look of the Wharf. They renovated the front of the restaurant, and the light shines in more than it used to and makes the room even more pleasant. It was a great afternoon for all of us.
Our sympathies go out to the family of Margaret O’Neill who died this past week. Margaret was a big part of this town and was the county treasurer for many years. She walked every day in her later years with her faithful companion Russell, and the pair became a familiar sight for many of us who are early risers. She was one of many who loved our town.
The town is starting to wake up from its winter’s nap. Many businesses are getting their stores ready, and word has it that there are a few stores changing their locations, so keep an eye out for their signs — it could be that your favorite store is among them.
Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
