As spring gets in to full swing, everything becomes a little more animated. This is especially true on Friday, April 2, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, when the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society presents a special screening of The Secret of Kells, a 2010 Oscar nominee for best animated feature.

The Secret of Kells comes from the same producers of the acclaimed modern masterpieces of animation, Kirikou and The Triplets of Belleville. The lyrical whimsy that made those films so special to moviegoers of all ages carries over here, in a story of a young boy living in a remote outpost, during the early days of medieval Britannia. An encounter with a master illuminator and the magical book he brings with him leads the boy into a dangerous and fantastic world where Celtic mythology lives and breathes.

The characters feature voice acting by Brendan Gleeson (of Harry Potter and In Bruges,) Mick Lally, Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney. The film is rated G, and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $8, or $5 for film society members. For details, visit mvfilmsociety.com or call 774-392-2972.
