Dolly Campbell spent summer last winter. Yes, I know we are getting a taste of summer now, but Dolly couldn’t wait, especially to see her grandson, Silas, so she flew to New Zealand just before Christmas and stayed through January. Of course, it was summer there, so she was thrilled to help her son and his wife’s family celebrate Silas’s first birthday. Dolly’s sisters, Libby from New York city and Jenny from California, made the big trip with her. Seth and Jacqui Campbell, parents of Silas, entertained Jacqui’s folks, Denyce and Carey Adamson as well. They live in New Zealand so they avoided the long flight. The party turned into an American Fourth of July fest. The colors were red, white and blue in balloons and other decorations. The food was hot dogs, hamburgers and marshmallow along with a cake studded with M & M’S. Mars Bars were the appetizer. How American can you get? The weather was perfect and everyone went swimming. Happy birthday, Silas!

Patrick Best, our 11-year-old Vineyard Haven resident, spotted mayflowers in bloom on Friday afternoon, April 2, in his neighborhood near the Lagoon. Good job, Patrick! I’m sure by the time I return you will have more botanical sightings for me.

I’m still entrenched in estimates and overhauls at Nonna’s home in White Plains. A big thank you goes out to our neighbor, Nancy Hantman, who delivered St. Joseph’s Day bread and zeppole from Arthur avenue to our door. That sweetened the whole deal down here.

Another big thank you goes out to cousin Gina Jannace, who had the courage to host 17 of our relatives at a beautiful Easter dinner in North Salem. I’m certainly not dieting this month.

The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network has extended the deadline for their $2,500 grant for small business loans to April 16. Men and women with a business who need some equipment or courses may apply. Visit online mvwomensnetwork.org.

Belated birthday bouquets go out to Carol Koury, who celebrated on April 8.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Nick Weyl, April Cimeno and Laura Daly today. Jason Murphy claims April 10. April 11 belongs to Jenny Kuehne, Suzanne Cory-Warren and Zach Atumick. April 12 is a party for Siobhan Frances, Elmer Silva, David Cook and Danielle Ewart. April 13 is shared by Barbara Kunzelman and Travis Gramkowski.

April 14 honors Rita McKenna Kean, Emily Brown and William Diamond. And on April 15 Joe Ojile, Shirley Kennedy and Wendy Francis take the cake. Many happy returns.
