The 100 voices that make up the Island Community Chorus will fill the warming spring air of Edgartown with two performances this Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, at the Old Whaling Church.

The chorus has been rehearsing since early January for its spring program, one of three performed each year under the direction of Peter Boak and with the accompaniment of Garrett Brown. This weekend, the choir should be even better prepared than usual for the challenges of its concert program, as the performance dates were moved back a week after the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital rescheduled its grand opening, a hiccup that allowed time for two additional rehearsals.

According to Mr. Boak, the program is built around an anthem his Federated Church choir sang last fall by Johannes Brahms, How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place. He recalled: “The Brahms sounded so beautiful, I started exploring what other pieces would be fun to sing with it. That’s how this program came together.”

In addition to the Brahms, the Community Chorus will be singing works by Faure, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Carl Orff, Pietro Mascagni, and the Russian composer Rodion Schedrin. These pieces are full not only of musical challenges for the choir, but also linguistic ones: They’ll be singing in English, French, Latin, Italian and Russian.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. A donation of $15 is requested at the door.
