Chilmark Preschool will present their spring celebration on Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. There will be live animals for your viewing pleasure, face painting, games, chowder and chili and other delicious delicacies for lunch, crafts, pony rides, plant sale, Mother’s Day gifts, and a raffle for a lemonade stand. This will be a major fundraiser for the preschool and their many wonderful programs. You may also place your order for tomatoes from Mermaid Farm. Tickets are $5 for children age two and up, Adults and babies are admitted free.

Ezra Newick’s photography show will open this evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner. Ezra will present a small show of his selected photographs.

Creating Possibilities, a family resource fair, will be held at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School on Saturday, May 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services’ Family Support Program. Families will learn of the many resources available for them throughout the Commonwealth.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chapter of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists will be at the Edgartown Library on Saturday, May 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. Patricia Stano- Carpenter, President of the MSOG will be in attendance. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9 and the Lighthouse at Aquinnah Circle will be open in honor of all mothers. Lighthousekeepers Joan Lelacheur and her husband, Richard Skidmore, will open the lighthouse from 4 to 6 p.m. for tours. As always on Mother’s Day, the tour will be free of charge.

The Aquinnah annual town meeting will convene at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, at the town hall. The special town meeting will convene first at 6:45 p.m. A quorum of 39 registered voters is required to conduct the business of the town, and your input is vital in reviewing the 32 articles on the warrant and the spending of $2,973,886.02.

On Friday, May 14, the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force will host a presentation by Kathy Meyer of Plainville this evening at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School at 7 p.m. in the library conference room. Kathy Meyer’s daughter Taylor passed away in a drowning accident in October 2008 following an underage drinking party. Mark Hoover, of Campbell and Campbell law firm, will once again be making a Vineyard presentation to discuss the social liability law issues.

The Aquinnah annual election will be held on Wednesday, May 12 at the town hall. The polls are open from noon to 7 p.m. and your vote is needed as each and every one really does count.

Family and friends of Heather Jardin will gather at the Portuguese American Club on Friday, May 14, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Enjoy an evening of fun, food, friendship, music, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. Heather is scheduled to undergo a transplant later this month and needs all the support she can get, to get through her procedure and recovery. Family and friends of the late John Gibson will gather at the Portuguese American Club on Saturday, May 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the John Gibson Memorial Scholarship Run. There will also be a spaghetti dinner at the club from 5 to 7 p.m. to benefit his family. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Please join the Gibson family and friends in memory of John.

Condolences to the family of Louise Norton, who passed away at the Brewer House on May 2. I have fond memories of many happy moments we shared over the past four decades.

Condolences to the family of Beatrice Welch, who passed away at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on April 24. We spent many wonderful holiday celebrations with Bea and her late husband, David, together at the Kinnecom home.

Get well wishes to Barbara Silvia, who is recuperating from her recent orthopedic surgery. She is expected to be discharged from the rehabilitation center on Sunday. Barbara and Gilbert will be staying with their daughter Deborah and her family for a while. Welcome to Maysel Monica Vanderhoop White, who was born on May 2 in Masset, British Columbia, weighing in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces, and measuring 20 inches. Maysel is the daughter of Tiffany Vanderhoop and Vernon White, granddaughter of David Vanderhoop of Aquinnah and Evelyn Vanderhoop of Masset, and the great-granddaughter of Anne Vanderhoop Madison of Aquinnah. She will be welcomed home by her brother, Brian, and scores of cousins.

Happy 38th anniversary wishes to Michael Dolby and his bride, Pam (Morgan), as they celebrated their special day on May 6. It seemed like only yesterday when we attended their wedding at St. Elizabeth’s.
