Chilmark resident and Gazette photographer Peter Simon was a member of the graduating class of Boston University in 1970. The only trouble was, he never actually graduated. A student strike that followed the Kent State killings that year led to the cancellation of graduation ceremonies. Instead, students received their diplomas in the mail. Now, 40 years later, Boston University has decided to give the class a formal graduation to make amends.
Mr. Simon will kick off the weekend series of activities by delivering a visual presentation on Saturday, May 15, at the COM building (640 Commonwealth avenue, near Kenmore Square). He will show many images of the formative and turbulent era during which he was a budding photojournalist. Many of these images have never been seen before. Mr. Simon will share his thoughts about his life and career. The event is free and open to the public. Mr. Simon can also be heard live and in studio tonight at 10 p.m. on WBZ radio (1030 AM).
