Next Friday, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School will hold its first Brazilian Awareness Day, in an effort for students to become more acquainted with the cultural heritage of the South American country that is homeland to many Islanders.

“It’s going to be a series of events,” said Elaine Weintraub, a history teacher at the high school who is organizing the event.

The day will start at 8 a.m. and run all day; events will include Brazilian dancing, film screenings, music and food donated by local Brazilian businesses. It is open to all members of the community.

“The kids are feeling very empowered, and excited to share their culture with everybody,” said Ms. Weintraub. Andora Aquina, Filipi Gomes and Rebecca Barbaros, all natives of Brazil, and Sarah Hall and Anna Hayes have spent the last month planning the details of the event. “It’s for everyone,” said Ms. Weintraub. “It’s been a very wonderful experience for the kids who are organizing it.”
