The first youth delegates to the Vineyard Youth Summit for Sustainable Development have been named and will meet this week ahead of their June summit.

Delegates include Oscar Thompson, nominated by the Martha’s Vineyard Charter School, who is interested in the environmental challenges facing the Island, specifically nitrogen runoff from fertilizers and septic systems.

Zen Hughes, also from the charter school, wants to work towards converting to renewable energy. Born in China and raised on the Island, she has volunteered at the West Tisbury Library, senior center and Hospice fundraisers.

Lisa Wilson, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduate and freshman environmental studies major at Green Mountain College in Vermont, helped to create a student-run vegetable garden at the Woodside Village.

Mary Vogal is a vegan who as a Stone Soup intern is creating a power point presentation on healthy eating and sustainable development. She wants to create a vegetarian restaurant on the Vineyard.

Evan Hall wants to “bring life back into today’s music” as an accomplished musician, composer, own his own production company and teach his craft to upcoming generations.

Amoy Anderson, who aspires to become a doctor and is an intern at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, is excited to meet the youth delegates from her family’s homeland of Jamaica. She is creating a Facebook page to inspire other Vineyard youth to sign up
